Formerly known as the Hire-A-Kid program, the renamed Youth Works initiative is a long-standing feature of the Human Services Department.

"It's basically a job bank or referral service," said Ken Freidenberg, director of human services. "It's for youngsters age 13 or above who register at the department to do various jobs such as yard work and babysitting."

The department matches businesses and residents with young people seeking employment and then lets the two parties involved negotiate details concerning salary, hours and other aspects of the job.

"We give them three or so young people to interview and they select who they're most comfortable with," Freidenberg said. "We are just a job referral service. We aren't doing any background checks."

The department registers anywhere from 75 to 100 young residents for a variety of jobs throughout the year.

In an effort to participate in its own initiative, the department also hired 16-year-old Lillian Brabner to help maintain the program.

"Lillian assists us by taking phone calls ... and follows up on the jobs," Freidenberg explained.

Brabner plays a pivotal role in the operation of the program and acts as a contact for residents and businesses who express an interest in the Youth Works program.

"Lillian will contact them and find out what their job needs are," Freidenberg said.

Freidenberg also stressed the focus of the program as one that gives young people a taste of the working world.

"We really want to promote it to residents and businesses to give young people an opportunity to enter into the job force and to experience working," he said.

Anyone interested in the Youth Works program can contact the Department of Human Services at (860) 665-8590 for more information.
