High Schools: Grossi, Bryan, Davis get Ridley rolling

Tiffany Grossi, Mariel Bryan and freshman Jill Davis scored four goals as Ridley High's girls lacrosse team opened the season with a 17-7 victory over host Notre Dame, giving new head coach Beth Potter her first win.

For the results of all yesterday's high school and college action in Delaware County, as well as previews of more spring sports, be sure to pick up a copy of the print edition of today's Daily Times.

Grossi also had four assists for the Green Raiders, who led at halftime, 9-3. Kristine Gormley chipped in with three goals and Rachael Sokolovich and Kerri Ricker also scored for Ridley, which got 10 saves from goalie Patty Wesolek. Lis Rudnay scored four goals for Notre Dame (0-1).

In other nonleague action:

Radnor 13, W.C. Henderson 7

Michelle Menser scored seven goals as the visiting Red Raiders rolled to a 9-1 halftime lead and opened their season with a victory.

Laura Lindsay got three goals and Esther Polgar, Jessi Lieb and Ashley Brennan also scored for Radnor.

Marple Newtown 18, Interboro 3

Jenn Cook scored six goals and had one assist and Dana Alf got four goals for the host Tigers, who led at halftime, 13-2.

Jamie Dardine had two goals and one assist, Brenda Wienckowski and Kylee Dardine got one goal and two assists and Caylyn Bowles and Kristie Wienckowski also scored goals for Marple Newtown (1-1).

Mary Keever got a pair of goals for Interboro (0-2).

Boys Lacrosse

Sun Valley 10, Roman Catholic 0

Jim Cusick scored six goals and Scott Messick had one goal and two assists as the host Vanguards opened the season with a nonleague victory.

Andrew Reckley, Pete DiFabio and Mike Reilly also had goals and Jim McCleaft stopped 10 shots for Sun Valley.

Upper Darby 11, Monsignor Bonner 10

Geoff Lorentz scored four goals and had one assist and Cullen Burke got three goals and three assists as the visiting Royals opened their season with a nonleague win. Andrew Russo added two goals and two assists, Adam Culbertson had one goal and four assists and Terrence Jones got a goal for Upper Darby, which got 14 saves from goalie George Carafides.

Chris Eccles scored four goals and three assists and Chris Matthews had one goal and one assist for Bonner.

Baseball

Arch. Carroll 10, North Catholic 3

John Gardner was 4-for-4 (two singles, triple, homer) and drove in four runs and Frank Gailey went 3-for-3 (two singles, double) with three RBIs as the visiting Patriots won a Catholic League crossover contest.

Ryan Gribbin, who struck out six in the first three innings, homered for Carroll (2-1). Brian Rorick, who had six strikeout in the final three innings, was the winning pitcher.

Card. O'Hara 7, La Salle 0

Kevin Paul gave up three hits and struck out three as the visiting Lions earned a Catholic League crossover win in a game halted after five innings.

Brian Campbell had a triple and single and knocked in four runs and Mike Antonini got a pair of RBIs for O'Hara (3-0). In a nonleague game:

Kennedy-Kenrick 11, Penn Wood 5

Andrew Fraser had a two-run double for the visiting Patriots (0-2).

Softball

W.C. East 16, Academy Park 0

Helene Goldberg blanked visiting East for five innings before the rain and cold weather affected her grip, and the Vikings made the most of 12 unearned runs.

Jen Euganeo, Tami Scanlan and Jacky Rowe had Academy Park's hits.

Delco Christian 15, Calvary Christian 0

Lana Trotter threw a four-inning no-hitter and struck out seven as DCCS opened its season with a nonleague victory Tuesday afternoon.

Trotter was 4-for-4 (two singles, double, triple) and drove in three runs and Sarah McCracken, who got a single, double and homer, had three RBIs for Delco Christian. Kristen Alexander got three singles and a double in five trips to the plate.

Golf

Monsignor Bonner 229, North Catholic 260

Joe Melito shot a 1-under 35 and Anthony Spatichia had a 1-over 37 as the Friars opened their season with a Catholic League victory at Karakung.

Jim Robertson and Pat Rugg had rounds of 38 for Bonner.

Arch. Carroll 206, Arch. Ryan 210

Bill Gropp shot 30 for seven holes and Matt Paris had a round of 34 as Carroll opened the season with a Catholic League win at St. Davids.

Eric Palumbo and Joe Rayner shot 35 for Carroll.

Tennis

Conestoga 7, Marple Newtown 0

The visiting Pioneers swept the singles, losing only five games, and the doubles, losing only two games, to drop the Tigers to 0-2 in Central League play.

In-Line Hockey

Bonner 7, Ridley 5

Bonner scored three goals in the final 2:35 and defeated Ridley in the deciding game of an In-Line Scholastic League semifinal series.

Cliff Sauler, who had three goals and one assist, scored the Friars' final two goals. Jon Donohue, who got the tying goal, finished with three goals and two assists, and Steve Gavula also scored for Bonner.

Angelo Zangare had two assists and Kevin Shanahan made 25 saves for the Friars, who take on Haverford in the first game of the championship series at 6:30 Wednesday night at Marple Sports Arena.

Brian Hannold was Ridley's scoring leader with four goals and one assist.
