Cawley gets Republican nod

Former Millerton Mayor Michael Cawley was nominated to run for mayor again at Friday night's Republican caucus.
Incumbent trustees Ronald Watson and Erich Carter also got the go-ahead for the election in March.
Cawley served as mayor for two years before current mayor and Democrat Marilee Najdek was elected. She ran unopposed as Cawley predicts he will be this election.
"Who can take two years off to do a job that pays $5,000 a year?" said Cawley. "It's a labor of love, you really have to want to do it."
Cawley said he likes a number of aspects of the job.
"You get to marry people and I like that," said Cawley. "Actually I'm looking forward to getting things accomplished with the least amount of fighting."
He was referring to the recent fire protection issue that caused disagreement between the Town of NorthEast and the Village of Millerton.
"I will oversee the day-to-day operations in the village and make sure the services are delivered with the least amount of hassle," said Cawley. "And along the way upgrade the quality of life for the residents here."
As the owner of The Realty Works, a property management company, Cawley originally wanted to serve as mayor to help his business. "Then things got too busy for me and I couldn't divide my time between both jobs. My business has stabilized to a point where I can handle it now."
If elected, he said residents can look forward to noticeable changes.
"Let me just say that when I start to get things done, people are going to notice, and that's a great thing for the future of Millerton."
