In praise of the NEWS' All-Star defense

It's been going on since the first running back, or quarterback, or wide receiver, made a spectacular play. The "it' is the big, bold headline. The "i'' is the glory.
The "it,'' in modern term, is a brief, yet memorable slot on Sports Center.

The linemen, the players who, most coaches will tell you, usually win the games, are not as photogenic - or at least their faces and accomplishments are far less likely to wind up on your TV screen or personal list of football heroes.
The 2002 NEWS of Delaware County's All-Star football team has, of course, its share of impressive skill players. Marple Newtown quarterback Gabe Maiocco, for instance, threw for over 1,000 yards, and Cardinal O'Hara junior Anthony Heyg-ood scored a dozen touchdowns in an injury-shortened season.
But the NEWS' first-team defense features several imposing linemen, including Marple Newtown's Jon Dardine. Tiger coach Pat Clark calls him "the best inside defensive linemen in the county.''
Another first-teamer, Upper Darby defensive tackle Chris Sfamurri, is getting Division I scholarship looks. So are tackles Omar Emmens (O'Hara) and James Roderick (Carroll).
You won't see them tonight, or even tomorrow, on Sports Center, but you're experiencing them today on the front sports page and highlighted in the lede to the 2002 NEWS of Delaware County's All-Star football story.
