A "Christmas in the Caribbean" luau was the theme for the Kiwanis Club's fund-raiser on Dec. 7. Held around the pool at the Hideaway Beach Clubhouse, approximately 170 people attended. The fund-raiser brought in $5,000 that evening however, since that night, several donations have been received which substantially increases the amount of the fund-raiser.

"We have identified a number of needy families on Marco Island by contacting the churches and schools," said Keith Mallard, past president and organizer of the gala. "Christmas packages will be put together that will include toys, clothing for the children because we know their sizes, and food and vouchers from Publix for the families to have a merry Christmas," he continued. There are approximately 23 families on the list to receive packages.

Guests arrived donned in typical Caribbean attire. J. Robert entertained and played Christmas songs on his violin and steel pan Caribbean style. Tickets for a Chinese raffle were sold that helped contribute to the amount of money raised.

During the course of the evening, the 2002-2003 new board members were introduced. President Joseph Swaja presented Keith Mallard with a glass plaque as outgoing president. "As a Canadian, it is very gratifying to us to see all the neighbors here so giving and caring for the less fortunate in their midst," Mallard stated.
