The Falcons found out what they were in for early on. After a quick three and out on their first possession, SPGT was forced to punt. The Bears got the ball and promptly gave it to their star. McClellan went 35 yards off left tackle on his first carry of the game, taking it all the way to the 8-yard line. Four plays later, quarterback Colin Clancy took it in from the 1 and the Bears never looked back.
The next three possessions for the Falcons ended in turnovers, the first on a fumble, followed by a sack on fourth down, and an interception. McClellan made each mistake prove costly with three consecutive scoring runs of 15, 7, and 21 yards, respectively. He also made an impression on defense, picking off quarterback Matt Dumont, who got a little too much air under the ball trying to hit tight end Jim Shanley over the middle. That interception set up McClellan's own 21-yard scoring run.
SPGT did make it interesting halfway through the second quarter. After Shanley recovered a Blake Jensen fumble at the Stonington 37, Dumont hit Richard Caron on a well set up screen pass for a 21-yard gain. After a couple of runs brought it to the 8, the Falcons got a pass interference call in the end zone that set up first and goal from the 4. Fullback Michael Nadeau barreled in from there to put his team on the board. The conversion attempt failed.
SPGT (4-2) promptly got the ball back after a punt, and Dumont threw the first of his two touchdown passes, this one to Scott McIntyre, for 29 yards to cut the gap to 14 points, 26-12.
The Bears proved that a minute and some change was just enough time to get one more touchdown on the board and deflate the Falcons' growing optimism. They needed only five plays to cover 54 yards. McClellan ran three times on the drive for 36 yards, including the 1-yard score. Clancy hit tight end Justin Clachrie for 20 yards two plays before the score. Jensen kicked the extra point and it was 33-12 at the half.
