WW-P South clinches berth in state tournament

HIGHTSTOWN-- Led by the veteran trio of senior forward Gio Buono and junior guards Natasha and Rashanna Edwards, the West Windsor-Plainsboro South girls basketball team started a new win streak last night and in the process clinched a spot in this year's Central Jersey Group IV state tourney.

The Pirates rebounded from an 18-point loss at Trenton earlier in the week to deal Hightstown a 66-48 loss. The defeat means the 6-9 Rams must win road games at WW-P North, Lawrence andEwing next week to qualify for the state tourney.

Buono rallied from a 2-point first half to score 12 second half points, while the Edwards girls teamed for 40 points to pace the Pirates. Nastaha's career-high 23 points included an 11-point second quarter, while Rashanna scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half.

Alysia Townsend scored 14 and Laura Boyce 18 to pace the Rams, who have lost four of their last five games.

NOTRE DAME 69, PRINCETON 30: LAWRENCE --Michelle Campbell 27 scored 27 points to pace the Irish to their 46th straight CVC win over four years. Jackie Reddy scored 12 points and Danielle Wexler scored 10, while Lindsey Britton scored eight for Princeton.

STEINERT 57, ALLENTOWN 25: ALLENTOWN -- Christi Redondo scored 10 points, Kelly Pugh made all her 3-point shots for nine points and Bridget Law and Sarah Bahr teamed for 14 to lead the Spartans to their most balanced offense of the season and their 10th win in 13 games after they bolted to a 29-0 lead.

TRENTON 55, HOPEWELL VALLEY 19: Senior Mykeema Ford netted 14 points as the 12-1 Tornadoes stayed a half game behind Notre Dame in the CVC Colonial Division race.

Teammate Charnette Phelpsadded 14 points as well to extend Trenton's 3-game win streak.

NOTTINGHAM 53, WEST WINDSOR-PLAINSBORO NORTH 36: HAMILTON -- Vicki Jenkins scored 22 points for the Northstars, who moved within a game of the .500 mark at 6-7. They need two wins in three road games next week to assure themselves a .500 or better record by Feb. 2 to make it into the state tourney.

Jenkins is just 37 points away from her 1,000 point with 963 total points.

Laura Trzasko scored 22 for the 5-9 Knights, who sawtheir 2-game win streak end and were eliminated from a run at the state tourney.

LAWRENCE 60, McCORRISTIN 55: HAMILTON -- Tashema Whittaker drained five 3-point baskets and scored 18 points for the 5-7 Cardinals, who kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the state tourney while dealing the Lady Mikes tourney hopes a jolt.

BURLINGTON TWP. 42, PALMYRA 31: PALMYRA -- Jamie Zagunis scored 10 points for the Panthers . Lasha Raws scored 12 points for the Falcons.

MONTGOMERY 35, SOUTH HUNTERDON 32: LAMBERTVILLE -- Arielle McNally netted 10 points for the Cougars.Lauren Slack scored 10 points for the Eagles.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK 53, OLD BRIDGE 45: OLD BRIDGE -- Lisa DiTuro scored 16 points for the Vikings while teammate Pam Weiss added 14 points.

COUNCIL ROCK70, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 52: DOYLESTOWN, Pa.-- Danielle Matulis pumped in20 points, Katie Young added 17 and KristinVerbit chipped in 14to lead a balanced offensive attack that carried the defending champion Indians (14-4) to an easy Suburban One National League victory over West.

NORTH PENN 53,PENNSBURY 36: LANSDALE, Pa. -- The Falcons were outscored 23-13 in the second period and never recovered as their record dropped to 7-12. Lindsay Krasna scored 10 points to lead Pennsbury's scoring.

PENNRIDGE 61,HARRY S TRUMAN 49: BRISTOL TWP., Pa.-- The Tigers fell behind by a 19-3 count in the first period and never recovered, despite 12 points each from Siela Long and Sharrell McMillan.
