SOUTHINGTON -- The second-ranked Southington High wrestling team won eight bouts by fall Thursday to steam past East Hartford, 66-15, in a season-opening CCC interdivisional match.

Returning state placewinner Jeff Fontaine (103 pounds), Brandon Taricani (112), Ryan Lee (125), Jaysen Paphong (130), Bill St. Pierre (135), Chris Lee (145), Ryan Seeger (189) and Jon Vose (275) all pinned their foes. Taricani's victory over returning state placewinner Sean Howey was especially pleasing to Blue Knights coach Peter Sepko.

"Taricani's match was great for himself and the team," Sepko said. "He beat a good wrestler. He wasn't intimidated, he came out aggressively and pinned which was really making a statement."

Southington participates in a quad Saturday which includes two of the state's better teams in Norwich Free Academy and Bethel.

Farmington 63, Enfield 18

FARMINGTON -- An influx of enthusiastic, new competitors helped signal a successful start to Farmington's season.

Caley Johnson (103), Karl Dinkler (125), Matt Hancock (130), Mike Mulcunry (135), Chris Thomas (140), Marcus Brander (160), Dean Kapura (171), Casey Hurey (215) and Dave Stenson (275) all won by fall. Matt Woodard made a spectacular debut at 145 by coming from behind to beat Mike Kokiel, 8-5, at 145 pounds.

"He wrestled great for his first time in a varsity match," Farmington coach Eric Misko said. "He wrestled a smart match."

Stenson, a first-year senior, showed promise in the heavyweight division.

"Stenson was very intense and is using technique well for a new wrestler," Misko said. "It's an athletic group who are picking up on technique very quickly and I'm extremely excited."
