The Connecticut Wolves (9-10-6) played away from home Friday night at Hershey Park Stadium against the second place Hershey Wildcats (15-7-3) in a crucial Northern Conference match-up.The Wolves, despite a tremendous start to the season, found themselves needing to win both of their final two games in order for them to reach the post season. Unfortunately, Hershey scored the game's lone goal and held off the Wolves' late run. With Pittsburgh defeating Montreal 3-1 in Montreal, the Wolves have been eliminated from the Northern Conference playoffs.

The Wolves began the game as a team should with its season on the line -- with urgency.Connecticut pushed numerous players forward in attempt to secure an early goal. The Wildcats, obviously surprised with the Wolves aggressiveness, found themselves having to absorb the Wolves attack. It didn't take long for the Wolves to create some chances. Forward Mark Manganello had three early shots, two wide and one saved cleanly by Hershey's Jon Busch, arguably the best goalkeeper in the A-League this year. In the 15th minute forward Mobi Oparaku, blasted a shot from 25 yards that was headed for the upper corner. Once again, Busch came up with a quality save to keep the score level.

Hershey's only chance of the first half came in the 23rd minute on a free kick.Wolves' defender Adam Eyre took down forward Michael Henning at the right edge of the 18 yard box. Henning took the ensuing kick, crossing the ball to the far side of the Wolves goal where an off balance Drew Kopp headed the ball to the far post over an outstretched Eric Pogue and into the net for the would-be game winner. Despite the goal, the Wolves domination continued. The Wolves began the second half with the same urgency that they possessed in the first half but Hershey met the challenge. Defensively, Hershey got behind the ball quicker, preventing the Wolves from obtaining any clear cut chances. Toward the end of the first half, the Wolves pushed all ten field players forward in the hopes of a scoring the equalizer. Hershey responded by bringing their forwards back to clog up the area in front of the Hershey goal.

In the 80th minute, a quick save coupled by an immediate distribution by Busch put Hershey forward Doug Miller on a break away with Pogue. The team will face the Hershey Wildcats in the team's final home game of the 2001 season tonight at 7:05 p.m.
