Seminary students busted for pot

A pair of Princeton seminary students taking a break from religion and indulging in a little bit of marijuana were arrested after a Borough police officer caught the pair puffing away.

According to Lt. Dennis McManimon, the students, Jeremy D. Schipper, 26, and Matthew Gough, 31, were caught smoking the herb while sitting on the steps of Stuart Hall on the campus of the Princeton Theological Seminary at 1:12 a.m. yesterday.

"I guess it's their own form of incense," McManimon joked.

Police said the two were startled when Sgt. Nicholas Sutter -- on foot patrol -- caught them smoking from a pipe and later arrested the both of them on charges of possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McManimon said Sutter was cutting through the campus on patrol when he noticed the pair sharing hits from the pipe.

"He apparently cut through the school and happened to see them smoking," McManimon said. "He could obviously smell it."

Both individuals, who are from California and live in Brown Hall at the seminary, were arrested, taken to police headquarters, processed and released with a complaint summons for possession of the drug and the paraphernalia (two glass pipes).

McManimon said arresting two seminary students for drug possession was new to Borough Police, stating that he knew about arrests on the campus, but none for drugs.

"I can't recall we ever arrested a seminary student for drugs," McManimon said. "We've made arrests at the school, but not for smoking (pot) on the seminary steps."

After the students were released from headquarters, they went back to studying and as far as McManimon knows, the school doesn't know about the arrests.

He said police didn't tell the school about the arrests.

"It's like calling their parents," McManimon said. "We wouldn't call the parents of an 18-year-old, so we didn't call them. I guess they'll have to read it in the paper."
