Tuesday, July 17, just shy of 100 concerned citizens voiced their opinions at a town hall meeting regarding Guthrie Center becoming a Main Street Community. At meeting's end, it was decided an executive steering committee would be formed to visit three other Main Street communities. Their task: report back the pros and cons of Main Street membership at a future town hall meeting. Monday evening, mayor Denny Kunkle, city administrator Laura Imerman, and city councilman Dennis Patrick were joined by volunteers Vicki Frohling, Marian McQuaid, Troy Christensen, Joel Baxter, Randy Nickel, and Terry, Linda, and Ken Laughery for the first meeting of the steering committee. The committee decided the name of the newly founded organization would be Guthrie Center Revitalization. Their first task: narrowing a list of communities, which includes Greenfield, Woodbine, Corning, Manning, Jefferson, Bedford, and Dunlap, down to three for tour by the committee. Selection and scheduling of visits will be discussed at their next meeting, which will be held Monday, August 20.
