The Panora city council awarded a $1,809,000 contract to a Blair, NE firm to upgrade the Panora water treatment plant. Eriksen Construction was among four bids, which were within $86,000 of each other. Work will begin after approval and a building permit is given by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The process is expected to be completed within a year. Included will be the installation of equipment and a building addition to install a reverse osmosis system to take out nitrates and soften the water. Earlier the council accepted a bid of $255,800 on the equipment. This was the second time bids have been sought for the project. Both times have been well above the expected cost. Well known water consultant L.D. McMullen of Synder and Associates, engineers and planners, recommended the city accept the bid. City administrator Lisa Grossman said dropping interest rates - going from 3.0 percent to 1.5 percent - made the project more affordable along with a series of three percent water rate hikes.
