Guthrie County recorded its first traffic fatality of the year Thursday, May 24 at approximately 1:30 p.m.
According to a mishap report filed by the Iowa State Patrol, Nadine Ludwig, 77, Des Moines, and passenger Beverly Chase, 78, West Des Moines, were eastbound on 190th Road at the stop sign at Chestnut Road approximately one mile east of the Audubon County line in a 2002 Mercury Sable. Failing to yield following the stop sign, Chase entered the intersection and was struck in the passenger side by Angela Lovejoy, 26, Coon Rapids, who was northbound on Chestnut in a 2001 Pontiac Aztec. All three women were transported to Audubon County Hospital by Audubon Rescue. Chase was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the accident. Both Chase and Ludwig were wearing seatbelts; Lovejoy was not. The accident is still under investigation.
Thursday, May 24, approximately 4:00 p.m., a two car mishap occurred at the intersection of Fourth and Grand in Guthrie Center resulting in the overturned vehicle photographed on this page. The Guthrie Center Police Department has not yet released details on the mishap.
However, the Guthrie County Sheriff released details of a second mishap stemming from the accident above. Thursday, May 24, 4:22 p.m., Krysty Kuebler-Melton, Guthrie Center, was en route to the above accident, northbound on Fourth Street driving Guthrie Center's 1989 Ford Econoline Ambulance. Entering the intersection at Main with emergency lights on, she was struck in the driver's side rear by Bobbi Jo Wolfe, Guthrie Center, who was eastbound. Wolfe stated she was distracted looking up the street at the original accident and did not see the ambulance enter the intersection. Wolfe was cited with failure to yield for an emergency vehicle. Her 1995 Ford four-door received an estimated $1,500 damage. Ambulance damage was estimated at $5,000.
