The Mississippi State Department of Education has given final approval to the abolishment of Tate County School District's school board and superintendent, according to informed sources. The decision signals another step in the state's plans to reconstitute, or return the district to local control. State Senator Steve Hale, who serves on the Senate committee on Education, said that the abolishment would come as part of the state's reconstitution of the district, or the returning of the district from conservatorship to local control. A special election would be held to elect a new school board. According to Hale, those serving on the school board when the district was placed under conservatorship would not be eligible for re-election. A new superintendent would also be chosen: through an appointment, rather than by election. After the district was placed under conservatorship, the superintendent and school board were active only in an advisory capacity, Hale said. Hale said that the state Department of Education has been very complimentary of the Tate County school board and superintendent throughout the process.

You can "spin" it any way you want. It is wrong. Thank goodness Tom Burnham will be leaving the Mississippi Department of Education. Our kids deserve better.

Why not have Mr.Lee Darnell stay in office as Tate County Superintendent of schools if the State Department of Education wants to let the people of Tate County to take back over control of the schools in our county? The people of our county elected Mr. Darnell to this position. He has a vested interest here and has the experience and knowhow to get our county school system back on the right track. It seems to me the state just wants people at the county office to be from out of county and pay them an astronomical amount of money. If what they are doing is above board, why were the people of this county not notified as to their intention. Seems to me our county school system should be run by people who are from and care about our county schools. Mr. Darnell was not even in office when the state took over because we were in financial trouble. It seems to me they should let Mr. Lee Darnell do the job he was elected to do.
