With their performances Thursday at the state qualifying meet at Roland-Story Thursday, three Panorama boys qualified for the Class 2A state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines this weekend.
Winners of state qualifying events automatically advanced to state. The rest of the state field was filled by the next 12 best performances.
Senior Cody Stepanek qualified automatically by launching the discus 152'0". The gold medal performance also earned him Outstanding Performer status from coaches Greg Thompson and Shane Arp.
Freshman Luke Webner and sophomore Chase Hennen qualified on a time basis. Webner ran second and Hennen third in the 200 meters. They were clocked in 23.33 and 23.44.
Stepanek, Webner and Hennen all posted third place showings.
Stepanek finished third in the 110 meter high hurdles, 16.06; Webner took third in the shot put, 45'1"; and Hennen sprinted to third in the 100 meters, 11.93.
Sophomore Hunter Simmons collected fifth place points in the 1600 meters as he finished in 4:49.88.
Sophomore Josiah Moulds was eighth in two events, the long jump, 18'10.25", and the 400 hurdles, 1:00.53.
Panorama had one runner fall and then also was disqualified in the shuttle hurdle relay. The 4 x 100 relay (Hennen, Stepanek, Webner, Tucker Duis) posted one of the faster 2A times early in the season. However, injuries to Stepanek and Duis affected performances the latter part of the season and kept the Panthers from qualifying in that event.
Coaches said, "This was a good meet considering our youth and injuries. We see a great deal of potential if everyone sticks with the program."
