Approximately 8:30 a.m., Thursday, May 3, a pit bull in the act of attacking another dog at the trailer court on Ashton in Guthrie Center was shot and killed according to details released by Guthrie Center Police Chief Mike Herbert.
The pit bull, owned by Melissa Brooks, was loose and got into the yard of neighbor Steven Leivas, where it attacked his dog.
According to Herbert, it is not the first time Brooks' dog has attacked Leivas'.
During this attack, in spite of attempts by persons on-scene, the pitbull would not release its bite on its victim.
Leivas went into his home, brought out a shotgun and put the pit bull down.
Herbert stated Leivas was compliant with police after the incident.
Also responding to the scene was Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright and Chief Deputy Jeremy Bennett.
Arganbright stated when he was police chief of Panora, he had tried to implement a ban against pit bulls.
"I know they are good pets for some people, but when they attack, whether it's a child or another dog, they simply won't let go. It's not a good thing. It always ends badly."
Leivas was charged with discharging a firearm inside city limits. Other charges may be pending.
Brooks was not cited in the incident.
