The OHS Boys and Girls golf teams came out swinging in 2012, sweeping both team play and individual medalist honors in their first meet of the season hosted by North Polk at the Tournament Club of Iowa (TCI) in Polk City. Nevada also competed in the coed meet. Each school fields up to six golfers per meet with the top four scores used to determine the team score. The results were mixed later that week as the two squads hosted their first home meet at Don Williams Golf Course north of Ogden.

Girls showcase depth with early wins
Freshman Sveta Hansen surprised just about everyone with a girls-best score of 48 at TCI. Everyone but Coach Randy Johnson, that is. "(Hansen) is pretty impressive," Johnson told this reporter during the team playoff match at Don Williams the week before. Close behind Hansen were sophomore, Emily Rinehart (50), junior Elisabeth Rinehart (51), and senior, Aubrey Hunter (53). All four scores would be considered excellent for the professional-level course. The OHS lady golfers hosted Roland-Story on Thursday and again took both team and medalist honors. This time it was junior Elisabeth Rinehart leading the pack, shooting a girls (and nearly boys) best 41 on the par 36 course. Rinehart's sister, Emily, shot 47 to tie for runner-up with Roland-Story's Lindsey Fisher. Fisher won the official honor on the tie breaker. Rounding out the field were junior Sydney Neubauer (50) and senior Amber Brietbarth (54).

Lettermen lead boys to first victory

Returning seniors Nolan Eich, Josh Turner, and Nick Wassenaar, along with junior Cody Good, combined for an outstanding score of 180 to top home-team North Polk by four strokes. Turner led the way shooting a meet-best 42 on the par 35 front nine. Good finished two strokes back with 44, just missing a tie with runner-up J. Osborne (43) of North Polk. Eich and Wassenaar each shot 47 to place 5th and 6th in the 18 man field. The Bulldogs hosted Roland-Story and East Greene at Don Williams Thursday (East Greene did not field a girls team). Fighting against strong east-west winds, the top four boys combined for a very respectable 179. Unfortunately that was still 12 strokes back of perennial powerhouse Roland-Story who posted 167 in team play and also took both individual medalist and runner-up honors. East Greene finished a distant third with 212. Lettermen again led the way for the boys with senior Mason Highland shooting a team-best 43. Eich struggled early to find his groove, posting a double bogey on the first hole, birdie on two, and then a devastating triple bogey on the par 3 third. Eich kept his focus, though, and finished just one shot back at 44. Rounding out the OHS field were Good with 45 and Adreon and Wassenaar tieing at 47. Turner, who medalled in the previous meet, started well, but the relentless winds caught up with him as he shot six over on the last three holes for 48.
