Tom Foster recently announced his bid for re-election to the Boone County Board of Supervisors. Foster, a native son of Boone County, was elected to the Board of Supervisors in the 2008 general election. He is a life-long resident of Boone County, graduating from Boone High School in 1964. After high School Foster joined the Iowa National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1971.
Foster has two grown sons who live in Boone County, Tim and Toby, and three granddaughters, Jorden, Courtney and Ashlyn Kate. In his spare time, Foster keeps himself busy with yard work, family and fishing.
Foster is a lifetime member of the Boone Underwater Rescue Unit known now as Search and Rescue Unit. He is a certified scuba diver and private pilot. Foster has been a member for several years of Boone County Farm Bureau and a member of the Ogden Lions Club. Foster has more than 40 years of active public service both to the City of Boone and Boone County.
He says while serving as Director for Boone County Conservation he was required to be a certified peace officer and First Responder.
"Those duties and skills allowed me the great opportunity to help, care and assist people," says Foster.
Foster retired from Boone County in 2008 where he served as Director of County Conservation for 22 years. He was responsible for several acquisitions of parks and wildlife areas in Boone County. Some of those include Carlson Wildlife Area, Buffalo Grove, Rhoads Acres and Mabaska along Hwy. 30 west of Ames.
Foster was a strong participant of the reintroduction of trumpeter swans and osprey to Boone County. He was the first to come forward with the idea of acquiring and building the High Trestle Trail running from Woodward east through Madrid, over to Slater then south to Ankeny. Foster also owned and operated his own private business, Russell Iron Works.
Current members of the Board of Supervisors each assume different responsibilities serving on boards and committees. One committee in particular Foster enjoys serving on is the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention committee.
"I have enjoyed the opportunity and appreciate the privilege of serving you," says Foster. "Serving on the Board of Supervisors has allowed me to grow in my knowledge and ability to serve the people of the county. The many years of service and experience working in local government has given me background to make the tough decisions facing government. The next three years will challenge local governments in stretching resources without increasing taxes."
