One child dies of swine flu in city; demand for vaccine is up

Demand for the swine flu vaccine was up last weekend in Department of Health-sponsored clinics and one more child’s death was revealed.
Although the DOH would not specify the ages of city residents who have died of swine flu, the Daily News reported on Saturday the death of a child this fall — the first since the summer. Children are particularly vulnerable to the H1N1 or swine flu.

When questioned by the Queens Chronicle, DOH officials would not reveal details about the child’s death — citing confidentiality — not even the exact date.
So far, the city has inoculated 39,000 children in its free school program. Weekend clinics were set up for older students, but because few showed up, were expanded to include pregnant women and people with health problems such as asthma and diabetes that put them at risk.
The DOH announced Monday it gave out 11,486 doses at clinics citywide on Saturday and Sunday. Queens led the boroughs with 3,399 turning out for the vaccine at I.S. 125 in Woodside
There will be no clinics over the Thanksgiving weekend. The next sessions in Queens are set for Dec. 5 and 6 at I.S. 210 in Ozone Park. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Anyone under 18 must present a signed parental consent form and those under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
According to DOH statistics, 64 people in New York City have died from swine flu since last spring.
