Wintry weather Monday morning. A pretty stiff little blizzard, for a starter.
A marriage license was issued this forenoon to Mr. Burrell Foster of near Wellman, and Miss Hazel Hagist, of near Keota.
Frank Vodichka sold a nice pair of young mares this week for something over $400.
Jno. A. Yoder lost a valuable brood mare this week. It was the mare from which he has raised so good trotters and roadsters.
Irvin Dierdorff and Clem Grady, of the S.U. I. are home for Thanksgiving.
Mrs. Lauser has been suffering intensely, with a felon or blood poisoning of her hands this week.
F. P. Friese and Ode Manatt, went to South Dakota, Saturday night, to look at the country and we expect they will own some Dakota dirt before long.
It is getting to be rather common now to hear of huskers who crib 100 bushels of corn per day.
We sure have the right dope for husker's sore hands at Holyoke's.

Tony Escher purchased several head of cattle from Mr. Chalupa.
Mike Busek was over here to see his niece who is making her home at the G. Wyzell home.
W. Schillig is working for Albert Escher this fall.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lusek and daughter, Elsie were shopping at Kalona Saturday.
Mr. Spevacek is hauling coal from Kalona.
B. Marhofer, the Richmond shoe man, went to Chicago, to stock up for the winter trade.
Middleburg
Mrs. L.R. Feldman and Viola Michael visited at L. Snider's Thursday.
The L. Snider children and Anna Patterson visited at J. D. Patterson's Sunday.
J. N. Schoebelen's are putting in tile.
Snake Hollow
John Hintermeister and Jim Gideon returned home from Huron, S. D. Sunday.
Miss Mattie Hofer spent Tuesday afternoon at J. Maple's.

We had quite a snow last Monday and some farmers have a great deal of corn to husk yet.
School opened last Monday with W. G. Ebersole as teacher.
Milton Brenneman started to Goshen College to attend the winter term of school.
Ida Boller is working at Cisero Dawson's this week.
Amish (Joetown)
Henry Millice, son of former pastor is visiting friends in this neighborhood now and expects to remain a couple of weeks.
Mrs. Will Liebe who was visiting friends at Lone Tree has returned home.
Ray Yoder attended Mr. Sunday's Meetings at Cedar Rapids, last Sunday.
Frank Pierce (Frytown)
Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Graper are the proud parents of a baby boy.
Mrs. John Wagner and Mrs. B. Patterson, have been in Waterloo the past three weeks, caring for their sister, Mrs. Josie Hukell.
Miss Lala Boone and Erma Beeney, were Sunday visitors with their friend Miss Gertrude Fry.
School at Districts No. 2 and 6, began Monday with F. L. Lewis and Albert McKray as teachers.
Sharon Center
The interurban meeting held at Sharon Friday night was well attended. Sharon doesn't intend to be left in the cold.
D.J. Berkey spent Sunday at Sharon as the guest of Rob Smith.
Elsie Graper is staying at W. Hughes.
Frank Sehr has purchased a fine piano.

Local News
The matter of street graveling has run into a snag for the present and a new course is being mapped out by the city council and mayor.
The Ritz Harness and Shoe Repair shop has moved into the little brick office building across the street from the Eclipse office.
Mose Levy had the misfortune to slip and fall with a sack of potatoes on his shoulder. He hurt his back quite badly.
A miscellaneous shower in honor of Miss Leona Von Drasek was given Friday afternoon by her sisters, Mrs. Roy Havel and Miss Irene Von Drasek.
Oliver H. Dunlap, 74, of Iowa City, passed away November 16.
Mr. Dunlap came to this community near Kalona about 1887, living on a farm southeast of Kalona which is now occupied by Roy Swartzendruber.
Bertha Maas Kepler, daughter of Frederick and Mary Maas, passed away at her home in Kalona, November 18, at the age of 72 years.
Mrs. Kepler is survived by four children, 2 sons, Jess J. and Alva M. of Kalona.
Ray Brawner and family have moved recently to the tenant house on the Dr. J. L. Fry farm, south of town. L.O. Gingerich and family moved from their home in the north part of town.
The Dave B. Hochstetler closing our sale Wednesday was reported to be a real good sale, considering the rainy day. The crowd was of good size and were interested bidders. Cows sold for $63, oats for 75 cents a bushel, and hay from $16 to $18 a ton.
Richmond
Mrs. Vic Malichky was called to Iowa City Sunday by the sudden and accidental death of her father.
In spite of the threatening weather and bad roads, a large crowd attended the Mrs. Wm. Lintz sale Tuesday. One horse sold for $162.50. Cows sold for over $30, calves for $23.50. Corn $1.05 per bushel, and clover seed $12.50 per bushel.
Carl Kos accompanied a carload of cattle to Chicago last week and received the top price.
Dale Jackson has rented the Frank Lintz home farm, 2 miles south of town.
There will be a dance here November 27, with music by the "Royal Vagabonds".
Pilotburg
Harry Green finished shredding Saturday and next will be Earl Fisher.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fisher's eleven month old daughter, Helen Frances, is very ill and was taken to Children's Hospital.
Marion Stransky and John Lang finished their corn fields Friday.
There was no Sunday school on account of muddy roads.
Mrs. Vera Turnipseed will hold her closing out sale December 4.
Middleburg
Mrs. Abe Mast helped Mrs. Ed Yoder with her housework Monday afternoon.
Miss Mildred Yoder spent Saturday night and Sunday with Miss Katie Miller.
An oyster supper was held at the Joe P. Gingerich home in honor of Mr. Gingerich and Mr. Aaron Miller, celebrating their birthdays.
Prairie Dale
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hochstetler, Robert Hochstetler and Melvin Gingerich and Miss Barbara Gingerich left Tuesday morning for California where they will spend the winter.
Ezra Brenneman is working for Sherman Miller and Lawerence Miller is doing Sam Hochsteltler's work.
East Union
Ed, Lloyd and Johnnie Knepp and Leslie Byler each bought timber at the timber sale last Monday.
W. H. Flauk shredded for Lewis Hochstedler last Saturday afternoon.
Bayertown
Little Connie Hastings visited at the Archie Baily home last weekend.
Earl Grout is the owner of a new Chevrolet Sedan.
Little Lois Burkley is numbered among the sick.
Hughie Madden took a carload of cattle to Chicago.
Evergreen
J.P. Miller and Lawerence, Willard Gingerich and V.F. Moore helped catch turkeys for Chester Miller Monday forenoon. Swartzendrubers's truck delivered them to Wellman.
Quite a few from this neighborhood attended the timber sale west of Kalona Monday afternoon. Good prices were paid. The highest was $42 for a half-acre.
Emmet Hochstetler shredded fodder for B.D. Gingerich and Joe F. Miller.
The Chester Miller family will move on the Jake Yoder farm near Frytown next year and Lewis Miller's will move where Chester's are vacating.
Egypt
Mr. and Mrs. John Knotek are the proud parents of a baby son born to them November 17.
Melo Horak shredded corn for Wm. Marek and Ed Horak last week.
The Rotenburger Brothers shredded corn for Otto and Frank Novy and Edwin Kos last week.
Prairie Flower
Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Reeves called on Mrs. Stanley Mouser and baby girl, Marilyn at the Washington County Hospital.
Mr. Rolland Benson had a severe attack of intestinal flu over the weekend.
Miss. Maxine Reeves is still unable to attend school on account of illness.

Last Friday night on the Ely court, Sharon played Shueyville, Sharon defeated them 46 to 12 and the reserves 72 to 7. Most of the Freshman had the chance to play their first game.

Read 'Em and Weep
Edward Nejedley had just gone to his first football game. That night, before going to bed, his mother told him to say his prayers. So, Edward like the obedient boy he is, said, "God bless mama, God bless papa, God bless me and make me a good boy. Rah Rah Rah!"
We surely feel sorry for Lamont. You know, he's in the Junior play and so is Dorothy, and Lamont likes to take her home after play practice. But now, since his car has a broken spring, Dorothy gets home any way she can.
Violet Vodicka has a new nickname. Here it is: Merry Sunshine. It was given to her by Mick Grady, whose nickname is naturally, Merry Moonshine.
Franklin and Amos printed their names on the wall of Mr Zehr's office with permanent ink. Mr. Snodgrass appeared on the scene and ordered them to take their names off.

50 Years Ago

On December 1 the Reif Family will have disposed of another unit of one of the largest stores in Washington County. The grocery operation will be sold to Joseph (Joe) Allen and W. C. (Red) Yoder. On November the appliance business was sold to Joe Chody and Maurice (Moe) Strabala.
The Reif family will continue to operate the department store plus the linoleum and paint departments.
J. D. Boyd who has been with us many years will continue as manager of the linoleum and paint department.
Benefit Sale Held Monday Totals $4,800
Mr. and Mrs. Loran Hershberger are the parents of a son born Monday, November 23.
Daniel F. Gingerich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Gingerich and Elvia Glick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Glick were united in marriage November 19.
Henry Bender purchased seven acres of land from Alva Miller this week.
The tract lies between Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church and the Glenn Miller residence on Highway 22.
S P-4 Dale V. Britton who is with the U.S. Army in Germany is taking a ten day leave near Gormish, Germany.
A corn picker on the Earl Hochstetler farm was involved in a fire late Saturday afternoon. Hochstetlers were fortunate enough to bring the blaze under control.
Relatives were entertained in the Ronald Hartzler home Sunday, at a birthday dinner in observance of the third birthday of Kirby Doolin.
Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Decker and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Burkley enjoyed dinner Sunday evening at Colony Inn at Amana in observance of the birthday of Mrs. Decker.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Harland, Kalona, are the parents of a son. The baby, weighing five pounds, seven ounces, was born Wednesday, November 25.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Swantz are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, November 26. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces.

Laura Hochstedler was a Sunday guest in the Paris Miller home.
Shirley Hershberger was a Sunday guest with Carolyn Miller.
Marvin Hochstedler was a Sunday guest in the Andrew Slabaugh home.
Grade School Notes
Second Grade
We have a new boy in our room. His name is Marcus Byler and he came from Florida.
Third Grade
The flu "bug" is still taking a toll of the class. James Garber is back, but Carrie and Andrew Borntrager were unable to attend school for several days. Deborah is back but Eric was absent Friday.
Multi-Grade
Mrs. Cecil Miller and Mrs. John Bender visited in our room. We hope Jim Garrett will soon be back in school.
Fourth Grade
Last Wednesday, we gave a play for Mr. Keiser's third grade. It told how an Amazon boy showed courage and won a Machete.
We had art in the snow this week. We divided into groups of four and each group made a snow animal.
Julie Hartzler treated the class for her birthday.
Sixth Grade
This week we have a new boy in our room, John Byler. Now we have 15 boys and 15 girls in our class.
This week in opening excercises, Barbara Beckman, Karen Russell, and Beverly Kinsinger interviewed Mrs. Roffman. Alice Patterson and Barbara Beckman gave a skit of "The Three Bears."

Rob and Nancy Patterson of Rt. 3 Wahington are parents of a 7 pound, eleven ounce daughter, Rachael Ann, born Nov. 24. Grandparents are Stuart and Rose Rice of Morton, Illinois, and Kenneth and JoAnn Patterson of Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Edelman attended the wedding of Mrs. Edelman's niece, Amy Hershberger and Charles Lord in Iowa City Saturday evening.
Kelly Gould is a member of the 1984-85 Central College, Pella, women's basketball team.
Gould, a 5'3" sophomore point guard, is a returning starter and letterwinner.
Post-Prom party to be held following the Mid-Prairie Junior-Senior prom May 4.
Officers elected were: Chairman Mrs. Gwen Augustine, Mrs. Delores Griffith, Mrs. Ellen Hochstedler and Mrs. Lana Reid; secretary Lisa Jedele; treasurer Mrs. Doris Fisher.
Donald Rich 51, a Washington County Farmer died November 20, from injuries suffered in an accident at his farm located 5 ½ miles south of Washington, on Highway 1.
Pleasantview
Several Pleasantview and retirement men attended the Rotary dinner held in the Farmers Savings Bank Community Room November 13. They reported a delicious meal and good fellowship.
A van load of residents went shopping in Washington , November 14.
Turkey favors were given to residents and staff for the Thanksgiving meal November 20.
Those who gathered in Grandma's Kitchen to make them were Laura Harland, Gustal Cline, Laurene King and Betty Whitmire.
Residents veiwed a film, "I Paul", in the lounge Wednesday.
"Vegetarian Snacks" was the theme for the Nutrition Activity Tuesday. There were samples of Tofu, bean dip and seseme seed crackers and oatmeal cake and other interesting snacks.
Richmond
Thanksgiving dinner guests of Dorothy and Dale Rodgers and Dillie Vodicka at her home were Dave and Judy Paul of rural Muscatine and Jane, Barb and Jennifer Rodgers and Rick Atkinson of Iowa City.
Clem Shalla returned to his home Thursday after being a medical patient at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Mrs. Glee Pelzer, Mrs Maude Kallaus and Louise Kallaus attended a memorial service for Merle Kallaus at Pleasantview Home Wednesday.
Sally Shalla of Chicago was a weekend visitor at the parental Richard Shalla Home.
Flint Ridge

The weather in the valley and on the Ridge remains very very mild with a few showers as was earlier predicted and we are looking for plenty more of the same.
Next Friday is the day to watch as the last Friday of the month rules the weather for the following month.

We have been enjoying the different shapes and positions of the moon the past month which was breathtaking and very educational for the weather observers.
We went out to Flint Ridge very early last Saturday morning and removed the electric fence along main street where Prince and Babe grazed the past season.
Very little hay has been fed on the Ridge this fall, yet as the weather has been ideal for grazing the stalks and meadows with the critters and mustangs all being in very good flesh.
Marion, Doris, Marla, Mary, June, Julie, and Morgan Yoder of Shaver Creek were Saturday evening guests of ours and enjoyed playing table games.
We attended Little Churches Group with Delmar and Goldie Bender back on the Black Diamond Trail along with Lester and Carolyn Yoder and Mary Slabaugh of West Upper Deer Creek. We enjoyed a fine discussion and Delmar and Goldie served refreshments later.
We have a photo of the pupils and teacher at Hartsock School which was loaned to us a couple years ago already by Lester (Bud) and Mabel Speas.
