Rebecca Hudson, a Loris Elementary School fifth-grader, was on hand to receive recognition from our city for her essay which won her the “Mayor for a Day” honors as part of the Loris Bog-Off Festival.
The Loris City Council Regular Monthly Meeting
The regular monthly meeting of the Loris City Council saw the city hall chambers seating at a premium. Along with concerned citizens, others were present to be recognized for their exemplary service to the Loris community, especially during the 30th annual Loris Bog-Off.

Following the invocation by Councilman Lewis Hardee, pledge, and roll call of council members, Loris Mayor David Stoudenmire reported on the success of this year's festival. He praised the efforts of the Loris Chamber of Commerce, civic organizations, and individuals responsible for the week-long celebration. Also, mention was made of Horry County Councilman Paul Prince's delivery of nearly $12,000 in county funding designated to assist our city in road maintenance. Stoudenmire reminded those attending of the December city elections and urged them to get out and vote.

In department head reports, Fire Chief Jerry Hardee's report showed our volunteers responded to 97 calls in October, for a total of 1026 responses to date for 2009. Stoudenmire thanked Hardee and the department for their outstanding efforts.

The new business segment was filled, as council voted on the passage of two resolutions. The Loris Garden Club appreciation entered the city books, citing the group's tireless efforts in the beautification of our city year round, and the extra work during our festival week. Several members of the club were in attendance. Resolution 17-09 cited the dedication of Christ Community Church to the city's 30th Bog-Off festival. The church group was responsible for various aspects of the event, placing eye-catching floral displays around the city's entrance road signs and in several spots around town.

Recognition of Loris's Mayor for the Day winner, Rebecca Hudson, was next on the agenda. Hudson's well-written essay was filled with her great ideas about what she would do as mayor to improve our city. A fifth-grader at Loris Elementary School, Rebecca shared part of her essay with the group. She was presented a certificate of appreciation by the Mayor and City Council.

Loris Chamber of Commerce Executive Assistant to the board of directors, Samantha Norris, offered information about the Loris Farmer's Market. While most other local city markets have closed for the season, the Loris market will remain open offering fall vegetables, holiday items, Christmas trees, wreaths, and other seasonal items. The hours will be a little different, beginning with Friday, Nov. 6, 13, and 20, Tuesday, Nov. 24, Wednesday, Nov. 25, and Friday, Dec. 4. The market hours are 2 - 6 p.m.

The public forum brought up two local citizens, Mike Long and Cherie SeJan, to discuss a long standing issue about water billing procedures. Long explained to the council that his billing shows a charge for a lift station fee of $35, yet both his neighbors do not. SeJan's was similar to Long's, yet said her bill never changes, even when they are away for a period of time.
Mayor Stoudenmire stated the city would schedule a public work committee meeting and ask all homeowners to be present to address the issue.

Councilman Lewis Hardee spoke on the need to repair the railroad crossing on Railroad Avenue and Liberty Street. Options were discussed, ending with a plan to contact the railroad company for estimates on the repair.

Gregory Edge of Loris expressed his concerns about water cost as well, and about the constant stream of water on Watson Street. Council assured Edge that public works would check on this problem.
