Patrick Delzer of Madison will receive the rank of Eagle Scout on Nov. 28 during a 2 p.m. ceremony at Madison's Trinity Lutheran Church.
Delzer, 18, currently attends Mitchell Technical Institute, studying wind turbine technology. He is a member of Troop 5 in Madison and has participated in scouting since he was a first-grade student.
Ninety-two scouts in South Dakota earned the Eagle Scout rank during 2008.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank a member can achieve in the program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. Since it was first introduced in 1911, more than 2 million Boy Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
To earning the Eagle Scout rank, a Boy Scout must have held the Life Scout rank for at least six months, earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout spirit. He has to demonstrate leadership in the scout troop. In addition, a scout must plan, develop and lead a service project, called an Eagle Project, that demonstrates leadership and commitment to duty.
For his Eagle Project, Delzer made improvements to the outfield fence at the Field of Dreams ballpark located on the south side of Madison.
A scout's service project has to benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts and serve the community. The project cannot benefit an individual or business or serve as a commercial effort.
Boy Scouts wanting to earn the rank of Eagle Scout also have to participate in a Scoutmaster conference.
After all of the requirements are met, a qualifying Boy Scout has to complete an Eagle Scout board of review. He can complete the board of review after turning 18, if he has completed all of the other requirements before his 18th birthday.
Delzer is the son of Scott and Beth Delzer of Madison.
