The crash occurred at the intersection of Albany Avenue and Mountain Brook Road, prompting police to shut down the intersection for about four hours. Both parties of the accident are West Hartford residents. The driver of the Honda Civic was identified by West Hartford Police as 64-year-old Tatyana Pikalova, who was traveling with her 1-year-old grandson inside the vehicle.
Laura Hammond, age 48, was the driver of the Toyota heading down the westbound lane when she was struck by the Civic. She was shortly released from St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center on Saturday afternoon, while Pikalova spent the night at Hartford Hospital after sustaining injuries to her pelvis and other areas on her person.
The investigation is still ongoing and it is not yet clear according to officers if the baby was in a car seat and whether the two drivers had seatbelts on.
According to West Hartford police, five of the last eight non-pedestrian fatalities here in town were seat belt-related. They also cited a study by the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration that 75 percent of people who got ejected from the passenger side of a vehicle in 2006 ended up dead. But when buckled up, the numbers look a little better: Only one in 100 drivers and passengers in fatal accidents who were wearing seat belts were ejected from their car.
West Hartford police will be out and enforcing their "Click it or Ticket" seatbelt wave until Nov. 29.
