Charles Hesselschwerdt and wife came down from Montezuma, Friday evening. Charlie, with the Misses Lydia Hesselschwerdt and Ina Lauser and Henry Lauser, attended the big football game in Iowa City.
Captain Wilmarthe, of the Ames team was knocked unconscious during the game Saturday and remained in that condition for over four hours, while Gross, Captain of the S.U.I. had a shoulder dislocated.

Albert Escher met with a serious accident last Wednesday afternoon. While trying to remove a cornstalk from his cornhusker his left hand was caught in the roller and bruised so badly that it was necessary to amputate his hand.

Schools No. 1,2, and 5, began Monday with Othny Lehman, Park Miller and Miss Hershberger as teachers.

Rob Jones purchased a fine horse from Morg Hartsock for a goodly sum recently.
Miss Celia Snider closed her fall term of school in district No. 3, Friday. Pupils neither absent nor tardy during term were Mona Metcalf and Lloyd Memler.

J. Y. Yoder has rented the north "80" of his farm for a term of three years to his son, Eli, and Carpenter Gingerich and his men are now at work putting up a new house.
A real estate deal of more than usual importance was closed last Saturday between Wm. Eitemiller and F.L. Rugg. Mr. Rugg purchases Mr. E's farm known as the old Coffey Homestead for $148.33 per acre. The place consists of 120 acres.
Charley Kolosick delivered to D. O. & H., Tuesday 83 head of hogs for which he received the sum of $1295.80. They averaged a trifle over 200 lbs each.

L.O. Gingerich had the misfortune to fracture a few ribs Friday morning while loading his tank truck with gasoline.
Mrs. Roy H. Miller returned home Tuesday afternoon from the hospital in Iowa City where she underwent a surgical operation.
It has been reported that Walter Beachy has rented the Mrs. Julia Kauffman property now occupied by Sam Bender, and will move there when the place is vacated by Bender. Sam and his family will move to the Jake Marner property in the east part of town when Mrs. Tillie Gingerich vacates in the spring.
Lewis Hochstetler has rented the Manatt Estate farm west of town and will move there about March 1st, at which time he will leave his father's farm in the Sharon neighborhood, John Speas who now lives on the Manatt farm will move to Kalona.
Ralph Slaubaugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Slaubaugh near Sharon returned from Indiana recently after a few weeks visit there among relatives and friends. He reports that while in Indiana snow fell at one time so fast that it was almost impossible to drive.
M.A. Kauffman who had a sale recently and is finishing up his business here, will go to Bremen, Indiana, possibly Friday of this week. He has been working at the wood working business near Frytown for sometime.
H.V. Beck, Weller Snyder, E.J. Hesselschwerdt, and son Donald attended the Iowa-Purdue football game at Iowa City last Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hochstetler, and Robert Hochstetler, Melvin Gingerich and Miss Barbara Gingerich will leave next Tuesday for points in California where they expect to spend the winter.

Nov 13th, the fence at the Hummer Cemetery in now complete. It was made possible by donations of labor and currency by those interested its upkeep. It is known that the plat for the cemetery was donated to the public in 1840 by the late Wenzel Hummer.
Bernice Graper, who attends Hazel Glenn School, had the misfortune while at play at the noon hour, Tuesday to fall in such a manner as to break her collarbone.
We understand Jess Walters has purchased the Albert Johnson place west of Hummer Chapel.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Smalley, Muriel and Kenneth and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Zager enjoyed an oyster supper with Oren Alt Wednesday evening.

Sunday evening a baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Mouser at the Washington Hospital. This makes Mr. and Mrs. Banks Mouser very proud grandparents and the new mother's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leeper, their first granddaughter.
Mrs. Dow Bishop helped her sister, Mrs. Nickols, near Wellman cook for shredders yesterday.

Mr. E. R. Barnhart who was quite sick at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N.J. Benson, is much improved.

Kalona School Notes
Monday morning we had a big pep meeting, each class giving a stunt.
The seniors, in the form of a Wellman pep meeting, showed the true Wellman Spirit, Louise, as Wellman's cheerleader, sat down while leading and Howard, as Coach McIntosh, was too lazy to learn his speech.
The freshman operated on Wellman (Ralph Drollinger) and found lodged in his windpipe, everything from wieners to old shoes, and from tin cans to inner tubes. The surgeon, Charles Evans, wielded the operating instrument, a very vicious looking butcher knife.
Boy, you ought to see this school! Everywhere you look, you can see big notices, "BEAT WELLMAN". The blackboards, doors, desks, the boy's sweaters and even the boy's shoes announce the glad news that we're gonna beat Wellman or BUST!
Wellman Defeats Kalona Here Monday
Wellman defeated Kalona 13 to 0 here Monday in the annual Armistice Day gridiron battle.
Total yardage gained from scrimmage; Wellman 190; Lewis 63, Shetler 39, Fuller, 22, Brown 47, Kehoe 19.
Total Kalona yardage 61 Yards. Ehrenfelt 50, all other carriers 11 yards.

Mr. and Mrs. George Eash are the parents of a son born, November 18.
A daughter, weighing 8 pounds 15 ounces, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Willard Schweitzer at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, on November 15.
John L. Hostetler, Kalona cabinetmaker, was killed in a highway accident north of the Cheese Factory on November 16 as he and his wife and daughter Sharol were in route to Iowa City for treatment of Mr. Hostetlers eyes.
George L. Rowe will observe his 90th birthday on Wednesday, November 25, he is enjoying good health.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan G. Gingerich will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on November 27.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kennard left this week for North Myers, Florida where they will spend the winter months.

Judy Dawson and Linda Russell, student nurses at St. Luke's Hospital visited during the weekend in the parental Stanley Dawson and Tom Russell homes.
Fire early Sunday morning destroyed a house and contents on the Abner Christner farm northeast of Sharon. The house was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Christner and family.
Canning for relief at the Jake Miller Farm resumed this week following a delay of can delivery due to the steel strike. Regular helpers at the plant include Jake Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Nissley and Elsie Miller.

of their son, Roy, which was November 16.

Kalona opened the basketball season November 13 with Riverside. The Kubs won 73-40.
Coach Jones credited the work of Jim Yoder, Lyle Miller and Tim Grady in sparking the team to victory.
The Kalona FFA Chapter has elected their new officers: President, Terry Steckly; Vice President, Curtis Cox, Secretary, Dan Stout: Treasurer, Frank Stransky; Reporter, Russel Miller, and Sentinel, Larry Grout.
Sophomore: Mary Ruth Frank, better known as Sandy, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Frank. Sandy is 15. Sandy is in FHA, girls chorus. Her favorite pastime is reading and watching TV. After graduation, Sandy plans to do one of two things; become a secretary, or a beauty operator.
Jim Grout, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Grout, age 15 likes tennis and baseball and also likes to listen to the radio or records. He favors biology. After school, Jim plans to stay on the farm.
Eight Grade: Student Ricky Fry: Some of his favorite things are: Food-Steak, Color-red, Car-Buick, Sport-Football and Basketball, Song-Three Bells, Female Singer-Connie Francis, Male Singer-Pat Boone, Television Program- Hennesey, Movie-South Pacific, Actor-Jerry Lewis, Actress-Donna Reed, Pastime-Fishing and hunting, Ambition-Doctor.
Seventh Grade: This week we are going to interview Ward Allen Niffenegger. He was born June 1, 1947. Color-Red and Blue, Car-Chevrolet, TV Show-The Alaskans, Food-Fried Chicken, Pastime-Watching TV, Ambition-Air Force Pilot, Female Singer-Debbie Reynolds.

Third Grade: The flu "bug" has gotten a few of us. Douglas was not here the greater part of last week. Carrie missed a few days also. Alan Hershberger treated us in honor of his birthday. David Burrows did the same.
Multi-Grade: Ronnie Troyer and Cherie Beckman are planning to read to us next week. We find that reading out loud to the class is a good experience for us. Karen's mother, Mrs. Richard Miller, and brother Rusty visited in our room.

Patty Stutzman and Pat Anderson were re-elected co-presidents of the Kalona Historical Society during the annual meeting, Joyce Niffennegger and Kim Jordahl were elected to three-year terms on the board of directors; Lester D. Yoder, Duane Mast and Virginia Stutzman, two-year terms, and Martha Beckman, Dene Mullet and Steve Reif, one-year terms.
Although Washington County went to President Ronald Reagan by more than 1,500 votes. Democrat challenger Tom Harkin beat incumbent Senetor Roger Jepsen by only twelve votes.
The Kalona Optimists had a good turnout for the annual Youth Appreciation Banquet. Mark Swartzendruber introduced the guest speaker, Ron Gonder, sports director at WMT.
Retiring pastor J. John Miller and his wife, Mabel, were honored at East Union Mennonite Church Sunday, October 28. Recognition was given for Miller's thirty-one years of ministy to the congregation.
Mrs. Norman Bontrager was honored at a birthday supper Saturday evening at the Errol Bontrager home. Guests were Irvin and Katie Gingerich, Gary and Julie Bontrager, Norman Bontrager and Clayton.

Mrs. Don Peters and Sarah of Des Moines were weekend visitors at the parental Robert Kallaus home and to celebrate Sarah's second birthday which was Saturday, November 10. They were joined for Sunday dinner by Mrs. Jim Litwiller, Bradley and Kristen of Wellman. Leonard Freund of Monticello, a former Richmond are resident, visited Monday at the Urban TeBockhorst home.

As you enter Pleasantview Home throught the south door you will notice "a new look". New carpeting has been laid in the entrance and Residential lounge and new vertical window blinds have been installed. On the east end of the lounge there is a beautiful new table and chairs, several davenports and other furniture.
Recent callers of Elmer Schrock were Stanly, Sean, Rick amd Stanlee Schrock of Altoona.
"Octoberfest" was held at Pleasantview October 31. Retirement residents and the kitchen, provised harvest breads with apple butter, popcorn and apple cider. Two residents-Millie Putnam played the harmonica and Lydia Marner demonstrated the art of Kalona tatting. Esther Eash and James of Kalona demonstrated weaving and Emily Roberts of Sharon Center showed how to spin wool.
Flint Ridge
We must tell you about a recent letter we received which was in somebody elses mailbox for a while. This letter was written September 27, 1984, and came all the way from Chugwater, Wyoming, and was written by Mrs. Albert Kessler who was the former Merle Snider who grew up in the good ol BayerTown Area.
She said she really enjoyed the Sharon Haymakers Band photo but was disappointed that she was not listed as the drummer because she was the first drummer of the Sharon Haymakers Band.
Merle also said that she was very pleased to see that ol Boone School photo as she saw her nephew, Alva Gingerich Jr. In the front row.
George and Leona Yoder, of Birch Creek, Don and Ruth Yoder of Kalona, were Friday evening dinner guests of Charles and Joyce Duffy of Solon and Robert and Orrianna Haman of Sugar Bottom up at the Solon Country Caf, where a delicious dinner was served.
We crossed paths with Pete Hannon up at Caseys and also received a solid handshake from him. Pete was buying some candy for his mother, Mabel Hannon who lives up at Pleasantview.
