At Sandwich Construction Company:
Sale of Photos to Benefit Palace
By: Jaimie Cura 11/14/2009
Photographs by the late Chip Arnold, a former Woodbury resident, are on display and available for purchase at the Sandwich Construction Company in Woodbury through Thanksgiving. All proceeds from the sale of the photographs will be donated to the Palace Theater in Waterbury. (O’Brien photo)
WOODBURY - Chip Arnold, a former Woodbury resident who lived in Southbury's Heritage Village until his passing, was an avid photographer who chose the craft as his livelihood.

He died in May from cancer. This month, Mr. Arnold would have been 58 years old.

Mr. Arnold's cousin, Jane Pittari, helped out with the cleaning of Mr. Arnold's condo after he died, as his two siblings live out of state. Mr. Arnold had more than 50 framed photographs he had taken, some hanging on the walls and others in storage.

Once family members chose photographs for themselves, Mrs. Pittari wanted a way to connect Mr. Arnold's photographs with his friends, who may want to own a photograph taken by him.

She approached Max Schlicher, owner of Sandwich Construction Company, 670 Main St. South, in the Sherman Village Plaza. The sandwich shop features the work of local artists on its walls.

Until Thanksgiving, Mr. Arnold's photographs will be on display and available for purchase. Mr. Schlicher said that by the second day the photographs were up, two were already sold.

Mrs. Pittari said the price for photographs is a donation to the Palace Theater in Waterbury, as Mr. Arnold was a fan of the arts.

In March, Mr. Arnold attended a Peter, Paul and Mary concert at the Palace Theater, with Mrs. Pittari, her husband and her sister.

At that point, Mr. Arnold had not been diagnosed with cancer, and the concert was one of the last fun events they attended together, said Mrs. Pittari.

"The whole idea for this is to give his friends an opportunity to own some of his photographic works," said Mrs. Pittari. "Of course, anyone can purchase a photo."

Subjects in Mr. Arnold's photographs include Block Island Race Week; The Gates, an art installation in New York City's Central Park, and scenes from New England and Florida.

"Chip had a really good eye," said Mrs. Pittari.

Sandwich Construction Company is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Those seeking additional information about the photographs may call Jane Pittari at 203-910-5610.
