100 Years Ago November 11th, 1909
Local News
A fine ten pound boy at the C. C. Dawson home since last Thursday.
Murph Adams has bought the Mrs. Manatt residence on West Barnes Street.
Thede Frederick has a new team, a nice little pair of mules to carry the mail on route there.
Tom Brewer is taking his two weeks vacation. His daughter, Miss Maggie, is his substitute.
The invoice of the Snider & Allen hardware stock was completed this week. Mr. E. A. Ren & Son, the new proprietors, are a pair of experienced hardware men.
We were pleased to see D. N. Louck on our streets again last week. He has been quite poorly for several months.
Mrs. J. A. Fry has been quite sick for some time, however her friends are hoping she is improving slightly.
Dr. F. H. Kisor and wife left Friday evening for a trip to South Dakota. They will visit friends at Miller, Dakota and take a look at the country.
The prospect for an interurban railway from Iowa City to Ottumwa seem to be pretty good. Keota is after it in earnest and other Iowa towns along the proposed line are willing to boost for it.
S. B. Ween had three nice cattle killed by lightening, last Sunday. Geo. Saur of the Washington Mutual Insurance Co. called Monday and adjusted the loss.
The Curt Wells sale, over by West Chester, Wednesday of last week, was a whopper, over twenty thousand dollars.
Rock Island Railway carpenters are remodeling the Kalona Depot, so as to enlarge the office.
Frank Herring received $1300 for 42 Duroc Jersey pigs at his sale last Friday. An average of $31 per head. One gilt sold for $102.
C. W. Grady of the S.U.I Dental College was a visitor at home Saturday.
The longer they work at husking corn, the more the farmers complain of the corn being blown down so bad. They all say it couldn't be worse.
Jacob C. Gingerich and wife, Anson Miller and wife, John Stutzman and wife and C. C. Gingerich and wife got away for Tuleta, Texas Tuesday evening where all will spend the winter.
Richmond
Our public school opened Monday for the winter term with the same teachers.
Kos and Spevacek are painting the interior of their store, which greatly improves it.
Mart Kern and family of Riverside spent Sunday at Pete Schillig's.
Most everyone attended the Strabala sale.
English River
Joe Kron sold his farm of 130 acres to Joe Kiefer, for $90 per acre and the other 80 acres to Wm. Kron at $75. He then purchased the Ford farm consisting of 315 acres for $94 per acre.
L. Doll is putting up a double corncrib.
Milt Chapek and gang commenced work of Escher Bros. big barn last week.
Mrs. Kate Thomas and George Schaffer of Burlington are visiting relatives here.
Doc Kiefer is painting Henry Kron's barn.
Mabel Chez closed a successful term of school at Palestine last Friday.
Pilotburg
Pleasant Mound School closed Friday with an appropriate program.
The box supper at Lookout Thursday evening was a grand success.
Miss Winifred Bailey's condition is so much improved that she came home.
Miss Susie Bitting visited at Henry Steiner's over Sunday
Sharon Center
Walter Weeber had two cisterns put in, also a cement wall for a new machine shed.
The farmers are repairing the house occupied by their telephone operator, putting on new siding, also new floors.
High school begins Nov. 15 instead of Nov. 8 as stated last week.
Wm. Plank is still working in the carpenter trade in Iowa City.

More rain last Sunday, which means more spoiled corn for the farmers. Corn is down very badly and continued warm, wet weather will cause ever so much to rot.
We understand that Harry Fry has bought the D.E. Bennell home and that Mr. Bennell is in Dakota looking for a location.
Cullen Moomey was a caller in York Township Sunday.
Mrs. John Kinsinger was a Tuesday visitor at the parental C.A. Zager Home.
Wellman Advance Items
Miss Jennie Nesmith, formerly an employee at the Advance office, was married Wednesday of last week to Mr. Henry R. Leitz, of Tipton.
Tom O'Flaherty has purchased Will Perrin's house and 10-acre tract north of Daytonville for his hired man, Geo Schwab.
Eddie, son of Mrs. John Slabaugh was kicked on the forehead by a colt the other day and quite badly injured. A wound was inflicted that necessitated the taking of several stitches.

50 Years Ago Nov. 12 1959
Local News
Kalona and community received about 4 inches of snow today. Some snow fell but most of it melted by Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Beachy are the parents of a son born at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Thursday November 8th. He weighed 9 pounds, eleven ounces.
Bambi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Shalla is a medical patient at Mercy Hospital. She was admitted Tuesday.
Mrs. Maurice Westrick is a surgical patient in Iowa City.
Kevin Miller underwent a tonsillectomy at the Washington Hospital today. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Miller.
Abe Kauffman is an orthopedic patient at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
The Johnson County District Court approved the sale of the Lizzie Hochstetler farm near Frytown to Muriel S. Miller for $38,000.
Construction has begun on the new home for Mr. and Mrs. Scott Hall and daughter Carol, in the north part of Kalona.
Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Rhodes moved Tuesday to their home east of the Methodist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Lando Gingerich Jr. and family have moved from Iowa City to 201 White Meadow Road, Rockaway N.Y.
Mr. and Mrs. Marion L. Yoder of Wellman are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary on November 16th.
They are the parents of 5 children, Max and Robert D. of Wellman, Marjorie, Mrs. Floyd Yoder of Kalona, Stanley, of Iowa City, and Mable, Mrs. Ray Miller
Rev. and Mrs. D.J. Fisher were pleasantly surprised Friday evening by their children and families living near Kalona in honor of their 56th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Levi D. Miller of near Kalona was honored at a surprise birthday dinner, Monday.
Peanut day will be observed at Snair Hardware on Saturday, November 14th with Jerry Smith.
Connie Peterseim, Carol Batterson, and Mrs. Eugene Way were in Marion, Saturday, where the attended the State Baptist Youth Convention.
There will be an open house at the Vernon Bontrager home, November 17 for Margery Gingerich and Eleanor Miller. These girls are both polio victims and they have a nice display of novelty and handmade gifts.
Mr. and Mrs. Jason Yoder left Wednesday for McAllen, Texas where they will spend the winter months.
Pilotburg
Wayne Stransky's moved into their new house last week. Lester Manasmith and Olin Bishop helped them move.
Shirley Statler and family moved into the Wayne Stransky house, which they recently vacated. Mr. Statler teaches science in the Wellman School.
Mrs. Albert Batterson returned to the home of her daughter Sunday from the Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
The Smith Family who were living in the Ferguson house on the corner of Pilotburg moved Sunday to near Wellman.
Larry Stransky, who is a college student at Ames, spent the weekend at home.
Richmond
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Showman and family have moved from the Miller property to the Malichky property in Richmond, while awaiting construction of their new home in Kalona.
Mrs. Clifford Shalla and daughter Cathy Marie returned to their home from Mercy Hospital on Thursday.
Sunday dinner guests at the Hubert Beranek home were Mr. and Mrs. Don Beranek, Dean and Donna of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Art Beranek, Denny and Dotty of Muscatine, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Beranek, Wendee, Jimmy and Sandy, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Beranek and Dick Beranek of Iowa City.

Curtis Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Cox. Age 16. Curt is the sophomore student council representative, Vice President of F.F.A and goes out for track and basketball. His favorite pastime is just goofin. After school, Curt plans to continue his education. Good Luck.
