Some of the area's brightest, ambitious and most determined youngsters were honored along with selected adults at the annual Guthrie County 4-H Awards Day held at the Guthrie Center High School Auditorium Sunday afternoon. Families were prominent in the ceremony and several 4-H'ers were multiple award winners. Shaun Finnegan, son of Mike and Karen Finnegan of Guthrie Center and a member of the Wichita Wildcats, was named Outstanding Senior. He also was winner of the Shubel Owen Communications Award. It includes a $50 savings bond and a plaque with the winner's name inscribed and displayed in the extension office. Alex Umbaugh, Grant Sky Eagles and son of Bill and Gretchen Umbaugh of Adair, was presented the Bob Elgin Award which goes to the county's Outstanding Intermediate 4-H'er. Earning designation as Outstanding Juniors were Danielle Schwartz, Highland Hustlers, daughter of Don and Carolyn Schwartz of Bayard, and Ward Umbaugh, Grant Sky Eagles, son of Bill and Gretchen Umbaugh of Adair. Selected winner of the Ak-Sar-Ben Award which is given to the 4-H'er who is making significant progress toward maturity and leadership through their service for the advancement of the 4-H program in their area, was Kayla Chalfant, U.S. Sunbeams. She is the daughter of Brad and Marlene Chalfant of Guthrie Center. The Chalfant's other daughter, Leslie, also a member of the U.S. Sunbeams, was named winner of the James Leo Community Service Award. The "I Dare You" Award, which is a challenge to 4-H'ers to develop strong leadership skills and lead creative lives, was given to Jared Calvert of the Wichita Wildcats, son of Jim and Lisa Calvert of Guthrie Center. Awards of Achievement were presented in all three age groups to 4-H'ers who excelled in several project areas. Junior winners were Lauren Hansen, Guthrie Center and Northbranch Beavers, and Matthew Vannatta, Guthrie Center and Wichita Wildcats. Intermediate honorees were Veda Sword, Panora and Cass Pioneers, and Quinn Ruth, Adair and Grant Sky Eagles. The senior winner was Seth Wilson, Guthrie Center and Wichita Wildcats. Wilson also was selected Hard Luck Story winner. Dennis Wilson of Redfield was designated honorary 4-H member. The award is bestowed upon adults who have made contributions to 4-H even though they never were members. Introduced as 4-H Alumni Winners were Kevin Crees of Bayard and Mel Sheley of Guthrie Center. The Award of Clover, given to leaders for every five years of service, was presented to Lisa Calvert, U.S. Sunbeams, 10 years; Marlene Chalfant. U.S. Sunbeams, five years; and Suzy Seidl, Highland Hustlers, five years. Bill and Brenda Thorp, Thorp Sawmill, Jefferson, were tabbed for the Friends of 4-H Award for support and services provided to youth and youth programs during the fair and throughout the year. Five members were recognized as Most Improved. They were Krista Downing, Cass Pioneers; Alex Umbaugh, Grant Sky Eagles; Danielle Schwartz, Highland Hustlers; Beth Grow, U.S. Sunbeams; and Emma Wilson, Wichita Wildcats.
