Brookhaven police are investigating a robbery that occurred at Smith Optometry sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Assistant Police Chief Nolan Jones said the business premises are still being inventoried to find out what is missing.

"There's an undetermined amount of money and valuables missing at this time," he said.

Office manager Elizabeth Allen said when she arrived at the office Wednesday morning, she first noticed that a welcome mat was out of place.

"I thought that was strange," she said. "It's usually right where it's supposed to be."

Then she noticed wood shavings on the steps, and when she opened the door, she noticed the lock broken off, she said.

"I closed the door back and waited until someone got here," she said.

When her father, Dr. Mark Smith, arrived, the two went through the office together and noticed that a large, heavy, rolling safe full of important papers and valuables was missing, as well as at least one laptop.

Police estimated they would be on the scene for a while Wednesday doing their inventory and investigation.
