Seussical the Musical!
| | | | |
HARLAN -- Harlan Community High School presents the exciting musical Seussical the Musical in two performances, Thursday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 7 at the HCHS auditorium. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Now one of the most performed musical shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza. Tony award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuss, lazy Mayzie and a little girl with a big imagination -- Jojo. Opening Number The opening musical number, Oh, the Thinks you can Think, captures the show's spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus and the invisible world of the Whos. The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant in a story that makes you laugh and cry. Most of show sung Most of the show is sung, in typical Seuss rhyming style. Even the dialogue is rhymed. The set, designed by HCHS students, brings to life the Seuss books, with lively colors and costumes. From the circus and jungle to Who land, those who have read the Seuss books will be transported into the world that Seuss created. HCHS's rendition of Seussical the Musical features a cast and crew of nearly 50, and a pit orchestra of approximately 15, including community members. The musical is open to the public for both performances. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students; activity tickets will be accepted.
