HARLAN -- Kitchen activities at the current West Ridge Elementary School likely will be suspended come April, as construction crews begin the renovation of the kitchen area as part of the overall elementary building project under way. Harlan Community Schools officials said bids are to be let in early spring. Once bids are accepted and work gets underway, the project will take about four months to complete. That's why authorities are shutting down the West Ridge kitchen in April, to make sure the kitchen project is done for the beginning of the next school year. HCS Superintendent of Schools Bob Broomfield said authorities are working on how best to get West Ridge students their school lunches from April through the end of the current school year. Options include sack lunches or bringing lunches over from the high school each day, among others. The new elementary building project is coming along well, officials said. The building will be ready for the 2010-11 school year.
