Jan Peterson, who works at the University of Kansas Medical Center, was recently honored by Cancer Action, named the social worker of the year and was awarded the Golden Heart. Cancer Action is a cancer support organization in Kansas and Missouri and covers six counties and the larger Kansas City area. Golden Action recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and is nationally recognized for its work. One patient who nominated Peterson for this award said, "I would see her every time I had my treatment and she gave me the courage to go on." Peterson responded by saying, "Folks are going through a life changing event. We do what we can to help reduce anxiety and focus on treatment. Sometimes it is the little things that help patients focus. It makes a world a difference to have resources in the community." Peterson is a graduate of Grand Community, Iowa State University and the University of Kansas. She is the daughter of Shorty and Doris Peterson, Boxholm. |
