In reaction to the recent string of bank robberies that have gripped western Wisconsin, Barron police have gone to greater lengths to make their presence known.
Officers have been visiting local banks and performing "walk throughs." While Police Chief Byron Miller said that his department isn't doing anything it hasn't done before, he noted that police are trying to be more readily seen in and around local establishments because the physical presence of law enforcement officers can act as a deterrent to crime.
Banks in Ridgeland, Exeland, Elk Mound, Hudson and elsewhere in the western part of the state have all been among the victims of robberies in the past 3 weeks.
Miller said he couldn't get into specifics about how Barron police are tactically approaching the threat of a potential bank robbery in the city, but the police chief said that a major factor is ensuring that there is a clear line of communication between law enforcement agencies and financial institutions. "We want them to know we're there," he said.
Miller has met with some bank representatives in the past few weeks for that purpose. While he stopped short of saying that all reasonable precautions were being taken, the police chief stressed that bank employees are already trained on what to do in case of a burglary, and they are currently in a heightened state of alert due to all of the recent armed robberies in the area. The recent crime spree also has police more vigilant, he said.
