Rider treated, released in semi vs bike crash
By: Eric Quade 11/07/2009
A teenaged boy has been treated and released from a medical facility following a Monday evening crash where the bicycle he had been riding collided with a semi.

The accident took place at approximately 5:30 p.m. a few feet east of Barron's city limits along Hwy. 8 near Wayside Cemetery.

A 16-year-old Barron boy, identified as Austin Wold, was pedaling a bicycle westbound on Hwy. 8 toward the city when he tried to change lanes so that he would be in the eastbound lanes, facing oncoming traffic. When he attempted the lane change, the teen was struck by a westbound semi. Gerald Trent, 59, of Pine City, Minn., was identified as the semi driver; his vehicle then pulled over a short distance ahead of the accident scene.

Law enforcement and an ambulance responded to the scene. Squad vehicles lined both sides of the highway at the accident scene. Traffic was allowed to continue on Hwy. 8, while emergency personnel attended to the 16-year-old bicyclist. The boy was eventually airlifted to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire for his injuries.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Tuesday that Wold had since been released from the hospital and only minor injuries had been reported.
