West Hartford officers arrested a man Thursday who had eluded both Avon and Newington police during previous pursuits. John M. Genis, 52, of 5 Liberty St., Middletown, had been wanted on a warrant from Avon for offenses that include leading police in a pursuit. He had a warrant pending in Newington, also for engaging police in a pursuit. He also had a criminal history that included 42 prior arrests. West Hartford officers arrested Genis at about 8:30 p.m. on exit 30 of I-84 by boxing him in before they turned their flashing lights on, Capt. Joseph LaSata said. Genis was charged with possession of crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft of license plate, operating under suspension, operating without insurance and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

LaSata said that police had been searching for a white or silver van that witnesses said they had seen fleeing from the scene of a shooting on Foley Street near New Park Avenue when they came upon Genis' vehicle. No one was reported injured in the Foley Street shooting, which occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 25, LaSata said.

The man police sought last week for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting his girlfriend was arrested on Oct. 27 by the Hartford Police Fugitive Task Force. Jose Sanchez, 39, of no certain address was charged with kidnapping, threatening, robbery by carjacking, assault, criminal violation of a protective order, breach of peace, engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was held on $250,000 bond and was next scheduled to appear in court Nov. 16.

Police received a 911 call at 6:45 a.m. on Oct. 15 from the alleged victim, who said Sanchez had showed up outside her Oakwood Aveune workplace and started yelling at her, grabbing her hair and punching her in the face. He grabbed her car keys and forced her to drive the vehicle with him in it. At some point during the drive, she said, he threatened to kill her. At her request, Sanchez allowed her to stop on Caya Avenue at a client's house to administer the client medication, where she phoned police.

Officers arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact with Sanchez, but he drove off as they approached his gray Buick. Although they followed him, the pursuit was ultimately called off.
