NEW WATER PLANT UNVEILED
| | | | |
A preliminary look at Belmond's new water plant was afforded to the city council and a small group of interested citizens Monday night.
Engineers from Bolton and Menk revealed a rough drawing of the building itself and where it would be located in west Belmond. The plan is to build the new facility in the corn field on the south side of Third Street SW. Most likely, the two story building will be located in the southwest corner of the property, right near the curve in the gravel road known as Reed Avenue. The entrance drive would line up with Sixth Avenue SW. The final plans for the plant won't be drafted until the crops are removed from the field this fall and soil tests can be completed. But some of the specifications of the facility are: --a lime softening system would be used, similar to the current water plant. The water supplied by the city would be soft, in most situations eliminating the need for a home water softener; --two wells; one on the east side and one on the west side. Each well could supply 1,200 gallons of water per hour; --the plant capacity would be 1,200 gallons per hour, which would be enough to supply all of Belmond's daily water needs in one eight-hour shift; --a 330,000-gallon above-ground storage tank inside the new building that would hold processed water to be pumped into the water towers after the work shift ends; --an emergency generator that would allow the plant to operate in case of a electric power outage; --a building constructed of decorative, colored block, a material called "inexpensive and efficient" by the engineer. There would be limited exterior lighting pointing downward, reducing "light pollution"; --a main water line that would run southeast from the new plant, cross the railroad tracks, continue southeast, and then turn east, crossing Highway 69 to connect to the large water main serving the industrial park. The preliminary timetable for the new water plant is: --planning in November and December; --DNR review in January and February; --take bids in March; --construction from April 2010 to June 2011.
