SUMMIT - The Co-Lin Lady Wolves got their basketball season off to an impressive start Monday in the Southwest Tournament. Sophomore Latoria Holder's 17 points led 5 Co-Lin players in double figures as they defeated the Baton Rouge Community College Lady Bears 84-57.
In the men's game, Baton Rouge bashed the Wolves 68-61, paced by William Nelson's 20 points and 7 rebounds in Horace C. Holmes Gymnasium.

Co-Lin continues tournament play today, meeting Delgado of New Orleans in a twinbill. The women's game tips off at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.

The Lady Wolves (1-0) produced plenty of offense. Sophomore Shareka Hunt followed Holder with 16 points. Freshmen Nadia Collins 14 points and Brandi Simmons 13 points. Sophomore Rachel Vigers scored 12 points.

"It was good to get our first win for the season," said Co-Lin women's coach Gwyn Young. "We've got some improvements to work on for our defense and offense. Baton Rouge has a good team that plays well."

On the backboards, 8 rebounds by Simmons led Co-Lin to a 37-24 rebounding advantage.

The Lady Bears got 10 points from Kierra Etienne.

The Wolves (0-1) cut their 14-point, halftime deficit to 1 point in a second-half rally but fell short of a victory. Nineteen points by freshman guard Marcus Hooten carried Co-Lin. Dwayne Brown and DeMorris Summers each scored 10 points.

"Baton Rouge played a hard ballgame and their coach had them ready to play," said Co-Lin men's coach Dennis Sims. "We got in early foul trouble, especially our shooters, Hooten and Summers.

"We made a good run in the second half but we made poor shot selection at the end which showed selfishness. We've got to get better."

Baton Rouge held a 25-23 rebounding advantage and shot 55 percent from the field. Brown's 7 rebounds led Co-Lin on the backboards.
