Veterans Day Parade
Retired Navy Captain William J. McGurk of Somers, a U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve veteran who is President and CEO of Connecticut's Rockville Bank is one of four Honorary Grand Marshals of this year's Connecticut Veterans Day Parade, which takes place Nov. 8 in Hartford. More than 4,000 marchers will step off at 1 p.m. near the Connecticut State Capitol Building in Hartford, proceeding for 1.26 miles through the downtown area. Marchers representing USS Hartford (SSN 768), the second Naval ship to be named for Hartford, Conn., will be featured in the procession, among other Navy units. Veterans who are registered to march or ride in the procession include those of past conflicts, as well as those who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, along with patriotic commissions from many towns. The parade will feature a Special Salute to the men and women who served on Active Duty during the Vietnam War. "This year marks the 35th anniversary since the last U.S. troops left Vietnam in 1974," explains Connecticut Department of Veterans' Affairs Commissioner Linda S. Schwartz, herself a Vietnam Air Force nurse. "We hope to give these veterans a heartfelt Connecticut 'Welcome Home' that many of them never received. Any Vietnam veteran who may not have a unit to march with is welcome to register and join us in the parade." The parade will be preceded at noon by a Wreath-Laying Ceremony to remember veterans at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch at Jewell St. and Trinity St. in Hartford's Bushnell Park, featuring a Department of Connecticut American Legion Color Guard, the Connecticut Valley Field Fife & Drum, and a bugler from the 102nd Army Band. In addition, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will offer free admission for U.S. veterans and active duty military personnel from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Bushnell Park Carousel will open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at $1 a ride for everyone.
