But this season couldn't have been more different.
The Plainsmen had a home for the first time ever, the Shenendehowa Aquatic Center, on its main campus after years of traveling like wayward swimmers, competing at cooperating pools from Mechanicville, to the University at Albany and now in Clifton Park.
The squad wouldn't have had it any other way.
"Each year I ask the swimmers for their personal goals and team goals," Dunham said. "I have my thoughts, but I listen to what they say.
"I told them their goals should be about reaching their maximum potential and as a team push ourselves to our limits," Dunham said. "We lost some great swimmers last year and had tough meets scheduled against Bethlehem, Niskayuna and Burnt Hills. Every single girl wanted to go undefeated."
The perfection was completed Monday afternoon as the Plainsmen drubbed Queensbury, 106-78, on the Shenendehowa campus.
"I came in last year from a club team and never expected to go undefeated," senior Erin Caher said. "When we went undefeated last year I wanted to be undefeated again for our senior year."
Shenendehowa senior Kelsey Barbour captured the 200-yard freestyle and 100- breaststroke event on Monday, adding 2009 as her third undefeated season with the Plainsmen.
"I couldn't be any happier with Chuck (Dunham) as our new coach and in our new pool," Barbour said. "There wasn't one girl who didn't saw that they didn't want an undefeated season."
The Plainsmen left little to the imagination in its final league meet Monday, winning seven events, including diving.
Shenendehowa's Olivia Samson won the 50-freestyle and set a new pool record, cutting four seconds off the mark in the 500-freestyle with a winning time of five minutes, 10.38 seconds. Deborah Korzun also won the 100-backstroke in 1:08.38.
While the undefeated mark was a priority to the staff, it was never guaranteed as Shenendehowa earned close wins over Ballston Spa and Bethlehem, closer only due to the Plainsmen swimming events as exhibition and not adding onto its overall scores.
That wasn't the case when Shenendehowa squeezed out a win at Niskayuna, 95-91, with every place counting in the Silver Warriors home water.
"Looking at the times the night before we were substantially down, it was going to be their biggest challenge in a long time," Dunham said. "They pushed us and kept us motivated by the times they were putting out all year.
"I told the girls that it was going to be a total team effort and we would have to be perfect," Dunham said. "Despite not winning one relay and only winning four events and diving we still won the meet. I've never seen that happen before."
The Plainsmen were motivated by the Silver Warriors own Facebook group page developed for the swimmers heading into the showdown. The Shenendehowa swimming women didn't appreciate some of the comments written by the Niskayuna swimmers and fans on the social networking site.
"I think they were doing it to motivate them and look to get the Niskayuna community to come out and pump them up," Barbour said.
The two squads are on another collision course in two weeks as Shenendehowa will host the preliminary and final swimming rounds of the Section II swimming and diving championships Nov. 6 and 7.
"We've all done all we can do to be prepared for sectionals," Barbour said. "I trust Chuck 100 percent. From here on in it's all about mindset. Of all my years swimming I've never seen a team step up as much as this team has."
