Deputies called to standoff, crash scene
By: Eric Quade 10/31/2009
Deputies at the Barron County Sheriff's Department had an especially busy 'night shift' earlier this week when a vehicle crash involving a fatality was followed by an armed standoff on the other side of the county.

The first incident was reported minutes after 8 p.m. Monday when authorities learned that a crash had taken place on Hwy. 63 near Echo Lake. When emergency personnel arrived, they found the victim-70-year-old William Sugden of Rice Lake-unresponsive. Sugden was taken to the hospital in Cumberland where he was pronounced dead from what appeared to be natural causes.

The preliminary investigation into the crash showed that the victim was traveling north on Hwy. 63 when his vehicle crossed into the other lane and crashed in the ditch.

Approximately 12 hours after the crash, the sheriff's department was called out again, this time to a residence in the township of Doyle.
Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said that law enforcement was called out to a residence at 2179 26th Street in reference to some threats that had been made. Authorities report that Will Chandler, 29, was refusing to come out of his home and was armed.

The Barron County Emergency Response Team came to the scene and, along with assistance from a Rice Lake Police Department officer, was able to coax Chandler from his residence after 2 hours of negotiations and take him into custody without incident.

The case has been forwarded to the Barron County District Attorney's Office for possible charges.
