A semi driver from Greenfield, George Beaman, struck and killed two calves on Highway 25 south of the Monteith Road about 6:25 a.m. Monday. The Guthrie County sheriff's department said the truck driven by Beaman was northbound before daylight when black cattle in the roadway were encountered. One of the calves, belonging to C.W. Thomas of Guthrie Center, was found dead in the ditch and another died later. Damage to the disabled semi was listed at $4,000. Value of the calves was $1,000. At 5:30 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office received a report of an accident on River Trail north of Menlo. Investigation determined a pickup driven by Tyler Estrada of Stuart was southbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle which entered the west ditch. A newspaper carrier found the driver lying on the roadway. The driver became combative and the newspaper carrier left and reported the accident. By the time law enforcement arrived, the driver had left the scene. Damage to Estrada's pickup was listed at $1,000. He was charged with failure to maintain control. Two accidents earlier this month were filed just this week. October 9 a semi and trailer driven by Jordan Carstens of Bagley backed into a car driven by Peter Wiseman of Guthrie Center at the intersection of Highways 25 and 44 in Guthrie Center. Carstens was northbound and stopped. He backed up to allow a westbound semi-trailer to turn south onto Highway 25 and could not see Wiseman's auto behind him. No charges were filed. Wiseman's auto was damaged an estimated $700. No charges were filed. October 11 at 1:30 a.m. in Casey, an eastbound auto driven by Gerald Lindberg of Casey struck an Alliant Energy utility pole on Third Street on the north side of the city park. Lindberg told authorities he encountered deer in the street. He swerved but hit the accelerator instead of the brake and ran into the pole. Damage was estimated at $4,000 to his auto and $200 to the utility pole. No charges were filed.
