It was billed as an over-the-top fundraiser and that's what happened as the Panora Public Library is now debt-free. The Taste of Panora fundraiser held at the library enabled the debt to be retired. The ideal for a new library was birthed some nine years ago when Bill Deal pledged $200,000 in memory of his late wife Patricia. This led to a drive for funds that continued into last week. The new building was occupied in April of 2006. Librarian Kim Finnegan said use of the library has increased at least 60 percent, especially in the last year with increased automation. A $1.3 million price tag was placed on the library by Linda Wendl of the Panora Library Foundation committee. Major local donors were Panora Telco, Panora State Bank, Farmers State Bank of Yale, Guthrie County State Bank and Lake Panorama Association. Other funding sources were donations from individuals and organizations, a state grant, fundraisers and local option sales tax revenue from the City of Panora.
