Four Chetek High School musicians were selected to the annual Tri-State Honors Jazz Band last week. The festival was on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Superior and featured two honors groups made up of students selected from schools primarily from upper Wisconsin, along with the Duluth and surrounding areas from Minnesota. Selected from CHS were juniors Joey Bognar (guitar) and Derek Westholm (drums) and seniors Hannah Lee (alto saxophone) and Kelly Damroth (bass guitar). Bognar, Westholm and Damroth were featured as soloists throughout the evening concert, which featured two honors bands and the UW-Superior jazz ensemble. The event is organized by festival coordinator Greg Kehl Moore, the director of jazz studies at UWS. This year's guest clinician was Lennie Foy, professor of trumpet at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. As a freelance musician, he has performed with famed artists such as Joe Williams, Oscar Peterson, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, James Moody and Roland Hanna. He currently records and tours as a member of the internationally acclaimed Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Brass Band of Battle Creek. The Chetek students were accompanied by Bruce Kamrath, CHS band director.
