CLIFTON PARK - Clifton Park residents will get a chance next week to hear and question the six candidates vying for seats on the Town Board at the League of Women Voters' Meet the Candidates Night.
In what has been one of the quietest political sea sons in a long time three Republicans and three Democrats will face off for the debate at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library. The event is sponsored by the league of Women Voters of Saratoga County. League official Mary Lou Classen said the debate was scheduled at the library instead of its usual site at the Clifton Park Adult Community Center because of the library's excellent sound system and its permanent stage.
Five-term incumbent Republican town supervisor Philip Barrett will be joined by fellow Republican board member Lynda Walowit and Republican newcomer Jim Romano.
Romano is chair of the Open Space, Trails, Riverfront Com
mittee. He is running for the board seat to be vacated by
Sanford "Sandy" Roth, who is retiring from politics in December.
The Democratic slate is led by former Shenendehowa school board member and two-term board President Bill Casey, who is challenging Barrett for supervisor.
He will be joined by fellow Democratic candidates Margaret Catellier and Wanda Zygmuntowicz, who are running for the two Town Board seats. The part-time town board positions come with four-year terms and pay approximately $12,300 per year.
The part-time supervisor's seat carries a two year term and has a salary of approximately $20,000. The event will be digitally recorded and broadcast later over the Internet on the League of Women's Voters Web site at www.Lwvsaratoga.org.
The time and date for the broadcast have not been confirmed. The contract with the company recording the event states that the recording must be broadcast within two days of the taping.
The debate's format will allow the candidates a chance for an opening statement. They will then take unscreened questions from the audience. Each candidate will be allowed to use two red cards for an additional 1 1/2 minutes to answer a question or to reply to an opponent's remarks. Due to the library's time constraints no closing statements will be given. The debate will end at 8:30 p.m. Library officials have also requested there be no candidates' literature table inside the building. Candidates in uncontested races will not be represented at the event.
