GROTON, Conn. - On November 1, the Naval Working Uniform (NWU) becomes the standard working uniform across Naval Submarine Base New London. The purpose of the new uniform is to meet multifunctional requirements at sea and ashore, and replaces utilities and working khakis.
"I like the new Navy Working Uniform," said Information Systems Technician Seaman Gregory Jeffries from SUBASE's Base Consolidated Telecommunications (BCT) department. "It is more comfortable than utilities, presents a better military appearance and is more serviceable than the old uniform."
Alterations to the NWU to make it form fitting are unauthorized, and the addition of starch to the uniform is also unauthorized.
The 1.25 inch wide black or Khaki cotton or nylon woven belt is the only belt authorized with the NWU.
Only personnel authorized to wear an identification badge, like Command Master Chief or Master-at-Arms, may wear two warfare pins above the U.S. Navy name tag on the NWU.
Optional wear for the NWU includes black gloves, foul weather parka, knit cap and NWU mock turtleneck sweater. Foul weather parka liner may not be worn without parka shell and when wearing mock turtleneck the sleeves of the NWU will be rolled down.
The NWU is not authorized off base for extended stops like shopping malls and outlet stores, but is authorized for short stops at gas stations, and convenience stores and eating lunch off base.
For more information and video on proper wearing of the NWU, visit the Naval Personnel Commands Web site at www.npc.navy.mil.
