GROTON, Conn. - Volunteers from Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) and PCU Missouri moved furniture at the State Veterans Home in Rocky Hill, Oct. 14. SUBASE and Missouri provided a total of 28 volunteers, and moved three truckloads of furniture into the homes.
The Sailors enjoyed helping out and look for more opportunities to volunteer in the future. Command Master Chief Chevy Brown, Missouri Chief of the Boat, recommends his Sailors for future projects. He not only believes in working with the community and getting involved, but enjoys the reward of seeing the difference they have made.
"It is not about the fame, it is about seeing the smile on a child's face or the elderly saying with a warm smile, thank you for helping," said Brown.
Sailors from Missouri are taught to appreciate the military they were given from past veterans. Brown thinks it is important for his Sailors to recognize those who paid the price for them to enjoy what the military offers today.
"As we enjoy the military and what it has to offer us now, someone paid the price for us to have it. It was the veterans, the ones who traveled the dirt road and paved it so future service members would have a better way of life. On the Missouri we teach that you are your brother's keeper," said Brown.
