Mundt oral interp contest is Saturday
| | | | |
Dakota State University will host the 27th annual Karl E. Mundt Dakota Invitational Oral Interpretation Contest on Saturday. More than 200 students and about 40 judges from 20 South Dakota schools will converge on campus for the contest. Students will compete in seven oral interpretation divisions: humor, drama, prose, poetry, oratory, duet and readers theater. The Mundt-Dakota Invitational offers all students three rounds of competition in the morning, followed by final rounds for the top scorers in the afternoon. The tournament presents trophies to the first three place-winners in each division. Along with individual awards, schools also compete for team recognition in sweepstakes awards. The tournament recognizes the first- and second-place teams in Class AA, A and B based on the total points earned by their best speakers in each event. The DSU Foundation supports the contest through the "DSU-Dakota Invitational Scholarship Awards," which include a $500 scholarship to DSU for the first-place winner in each division. The DSU Foundation also awards one $750 scholarship to each first-place team earning a sweepstakes award. Students from each winning team are eligible to apply for these awards in the spring. The Karl E. Mundt Dakota Invitational continues to be the only invitational oral interpretation contest in the state offering competition within classes. Normally, students face competitors from all classes. At the Mundt-Dakota Invitational, Round 2 of the tournament features "in-class" competition, in which students from Class AA face AA competitors, Class A faces A, and Class B faces B. This provides students a rare regular-season opportunity to go head-to-head with students they will compete against in district, region and state competition. The Mundt-Dakota Invitational also offers honor finals. Traditionally, the tournament offers grand finals for the top five to eight entrants in each division. In addition, this tournament holds honor finals for the next tier of top finishers, offering more students a chance for practice, competition and critique from judges. The Karl E. Mundt Dakota Invitational is sponsored by the DSU College of Arts and Sciences and supported with a grant from the Karl E. Mundt Foundation. The tournament is directed by Cory Allen Heidelberger and Tobias Uecker.
