HCHS to host all-state auditions
By: 10/23/2009
HARLAN -- For the first time in decades, likely since the 1970s, Harlan Community High School will host the district all-state music auditions, scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 24 at the high school and middle school buildings in Harlan.
Music students from across southwest Iowa will converge on Harlan Saturday for the annual auditions. As many as 800 students are expected to audition.
Harlan Community is hosting students from the following counties: Adair, Adams, Audubon, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Crawford, Dallas, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Harrison, Madison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Shelby, Taylor and Union.
Hundreds of students will travel to Harlan to audition for either the all-state band, orchestra or chorus. In total from across the state there will be roughly 300 members in the all-state band, 200 in the all-state orchestra and upwards of 600 in the all-state choir.
Other district audition sites include Storm Lake, Hampton, West Delaware, Indianola and Fairfield.
Those who are selected will perform at the all-state music festival festivities in Ames Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 19-21. An evening concert will be held Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, on the campus of Iowa State University.
The Iowa All-State Music Festival is held annually and is jointly sponsored by the Iowa Music Educators Association and Iowa High School Music Association.
The intent is to provide a statewide festival featuring the best instrumental and choral high school musicians from across the state.
Harlan Community will have a number of students auditioning for selection to all-state. There will be 10 instrumentalists and 14 vocalists who have prepared for months for this weekend's auditions.
The students are under the direction of HCHS Band Director Craig Crilly and Vocal Director Heidi Thies.
Officials said they are excited to host the event, and have upwards of 80 volunteers on hand to help run the audition process throughout the day.
Students will audition on their individual (group for vocal) pieces, and if the first round goes well, they can be recalled for a second round of auditions as well.
Once recalls are concluded, those selected to one of the three music groups will be notified via posting at the high school Saturday afternoon.
The all-state auditions are the beginning of a busy fall for HCS band and vocal musicians, who also will perform the musical Seussical the Musical in early November, as well as present fall vocal and band concerts from now through December.
