Chetek City Council members voted to approve a maximum 20-percent increase in hangar lease fees at their Oct. 13 meeting.

Leases, which currently cost $92.50 per year, have not gone up since 2004. Lessees will pay an extra $18.50 when the change goes into effect. By the terms of their agreement (excluding three older agreements), lessees must house at least one plane in each hangar. They can store personal recreational items on the site, but they are not allowed to rent out space to others. Lessees who rent out space to others could be caught breaching their contact and lose their lease, Clerk Carmen Newman said. There are 37 hangars on the property. City officials have the right to inspect hangars during reasonable hours, although Newman says inspections are not routinely done. The city paid $2,130 to cover airport costs last year. Council members are aware that airport expenditures are controversial, so the increase is an attempt to balance income with costs. Newman plans to schedule a meeting in two weeks to go over the city's 2010 budget. A comparative analysis of the city's annual expenditures will be included in next week's edition. Resignations Due to health issues, former Alderman Don Janota has resigned from the Chetek Community Center Board. Citing work conflicts, Carol Wall resigned from the board of appeals. Approved A model floodplain ordinance from the Department of Natural Resources was approved. The council passed a resolution to show support for the Chetek Lakes Protection Association's bid for a Department of Natural Resources grant. An outlay account for the Calhoun Memorial Museum contains $5,000; the city council approved dispersing $1,800 to pay for rent this winter. The museum has covered its own utility bills this year, Newman said. The council also elected to pay a $100 annual sponsorship fee to the Chetek Area Historical Society.
