Kalona City Council Monday night, Oct. 19, gave the green light to upgrades to the Kalona Recreation Program.
The council gave approval to plans to upgrade and re-arrange the weight and exercise rooms in the Rec Center with the purchase of equipment and mats costing $11,047.
This included puzzle tile to replace mats at a cost of $1,940 for the weight room and $3,110 for the exercise room. Equipment to be purchased from Second Wind includes a Star Trac S Series recumbent bike, $1,599 used Life Fitness Leg Extension machine, $600; used Life Fitness seated leg curl, $600; Octane Pro 370 Elliptical, $2,800; 2 pieces of cardio equipment, $199; 2 pieces of Life Fitness strength equipment, $199.
City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh and Fitzenry said the exercise room with the new equipment and treadmills would be moved into the former storage room with windows. This room will also have a 10 ft. x 6 ft. stretching area and two wall mounted television sets.
The weight room is being moved into the present exercise room and makes both areas more usable for both men and women.
Fitzenry pointed out that he wants the equipment in place so open houses could be held in November in an effort to increase the membership base. There are presently 90 members. He said the winter months are the best for membership and he wants to push the 24/7 availability of the facility.
Future plans include adding a keyless entry and security cameras. Schlabaugh added that replacement of other equipment will be put into a planned capital improvement program. The racquetball court also needs improvements.
Schlabaugh also noted work will begin soon on the roof and siding repairs to the Rec Center/City Hall.
Schlabaugh and Public Works Supervisor Mike Bowlin was given the go ahead on plans to clean and paint the pool with the condition they check with contracts on cost of doing additional work. Bowlin said Pospisil Painting, Inc., Cedar Rapids, had given a proposal to sandblast and paint the pool for $17,000.
Downtown Renovation
Schlabaugh said he was making a presentation on the Downtown Renovation Project to Rotary on Tuesday and to the Washington County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 5. There will be a meeting with grant writer Katherine Ollendieck will be at the 5 p.m. Oct. 28 Downtown Revitalization meeting to work on plans for an application for a Vision Iowa grant.
Schlabaugh said he had met with Ed Raber of WEDG to explore possible grants to help EPC plastic plant to improve their employee parking lot since the city turned down EPC's request for $50,000 from the city.
Schlabaugh said he was also working with three companies to get proposals for developing a city website.
He added that the city park and campground's water was being shutoff on Oct. 21.
