CCCMS takes lead in school recycling

Recycling efforts at Clay Center schools are seeing similar results that Clay Center's recycling pick-up has seen -- residents are continuing to recycle about as much as they have since the program started and recycling has slightly increased.

While recycling at CCCHS is not new, the program extended to CCCMS in January of last year. The CCCMS program has surpassed its high school counter part and now collects more recyclables than any other school in the district.

CCCHS started recycling through its Ecology Club in 1996 and has recycled on and off since then, sponsor Janell Rieger said. Student Council and students have collected recyclable materials in the last three years Reiger has been with the school.

CCCMS sponsor Lynn Auld said the middle school program has gone over "really well" in both the student response and how much the students collect.

"It's important to keep them involved," Auld said. "If the kids are helping and recycling, they're helping the environment."

Both schools collect paper, newspaper and plastic by putting containers in classrooms that want to participate in recycling. The high school collects materials every other week; the middle school every other week. Bins for plastic bottles are also placed in the common areas.

The high school collects about three large trash bags every other week. Auld said the middle school varies on how much is collected, but usually collects at least few small bags of each item.

"We collect a lot of newspapers, they're the biggest items we collect," Auld said.

The high school students help out the middle-schoolers by picking up their recyclables and taking recyclables from the two schools to the recycling center at the county landfill. A small amount is also collected from the grade schools.

"The high school helps us out," Auld said.

Students who are involved in the middle school's Recycling Club are Felicia Luczak, Ryan Affolter, Dalton Schwab, Josh Carmona, Jordan Fleming, Hayden Heigele, Rebeka J. Johnson, Lindley Lund, Tommy Cowley, Marchus Brandhorst, Nathan Lundholm and Austin Reed.
